I want to explain something in my application that can't be explained otherwise.
can I add a letter to the adcom and explain the situation (avoiding an apologetic tone)?
is there a format for those types of letters?

Can’t you put whatever you are going to say in the “Additional Info” textbox (or upload box) if you are using the Common App?

nope, I need this additional info for something else:

Be careful how much you add on to your application, while it’s perfectly alright to explain a thing or two, you don’t want to come off to the adcoms as too ‘special’.

I need one explanation regarding a test I took. all the other things are regular

bump bump bump

Why in the world would you have to explain a test? You took it and you either did well or not.

I don’t think I have to explain myself. I feel it is necessary

^^^

A non-specific question will not likely yield good advice. You don’t have to explain yourself to anyone here, but you’re not going to get the best, most thoughtful answer unless you do. Your option.

I agree with speihei.

If the reason why you bombed the test was because of an illness or something, then yes, by all means explain. But I don’t think adcoms are going to look at an extra letter-they already have enough to do looking at the app, transcript, essays, recs, etc etc. If you need to communicate something, put it in the Additional Info box. There are 2000 characters there, for heaven’s sake- take out something and put a short, concise explanation in.

speihei and fuzzyfirebunny thank you, I agree with what both of you said.

I want to explain why I took a US history exam although I am an international student, the thing is I don’t want to explain why I got my score ( I am pleased with my score) I want to explain why I felt it is necessary for me to do this specific test.

as for the additional info box: I already has too much thing to put there aside from my resume I want to put a thought I have about something. and I don’t think I will be able to put all of those things in that box ( I think it will be ridiculous to mix so many things in one box)

Consider this: they may not really look at what you wrote. Instead, they see your letter and either think you are pandering, or apologizing for a bad grade. I would think you should skip this separate letter. They already have at least 18+ pages in your file. let them focus on something else.
