Hey guys! If anyone would like to take the time to read over my Letter To My Future Roommate essay I would REALLY appreciate it :) Just private message me and I'll send you the essay!

Hi @magistreal,

I applied to Stanford this past year so I do remember this essay. I didn’t end up getting in but don’t let that discourage you at all. But I remember my essays being some of the best I ever written so I’m going to offer you some advice. I know you’ve written the essay already but this advice may aid you when you’re reading over it. First of all, the supplements essays are VERY important. They are usually the deciding factors on a lot of admissions (because most students applying have very high GPA, SAT/ACT, etc). Really speak from your heart. I know that sounds kinda cliche but its very true, most importantly the letter to the roommate essay. It should be totally personal that reveals something special about yourself. This is the one essay that is really going to give the admissions officers an accurate depiction of you!

Having said this, this may be the one essay you might not want to have others read. Maybe have your parents review it or maybe a teacher you’re close with. If this essay is written the right way, you won’t want others to read it (I know my roommate essay was very personal haha). But that’s what Stanford likes, they enjoy seeing students push the limits in their essays, writing about something that they normally wouldn’t talk about. I’m not trying to say to reveal your deepest darkest secret to them, but make sure you don’t hold back on the essay.

I wrote about 10 drafts alone on my roommate supplement essay, just to give you an idea how many times i edited it.

I really hope this helps, if you have any questions on any part of the Stanford application you can always reply or message me. Good Luck!

I agree with the post above.

This essay should really portray who you are. Don’t worry about reviewing it extensively.

This is a great blog to read as you’re preparing your Stanford app:

Here’s an excerpt from a Letter to Roommate Essay that’s posted:

“I sing show tunes in the shower, and I tell math jokes while playing the guitar. Back massages totally make my day. I firmly hold with the belief that children are much cuter when they’re not your own. I eat pancakes at dinnertime, and I think that creamed spinach should not exist. On the other hand, I am totally fine with cottage cheese.”

Just relax. Your voice should shine in this one.

I would love to read it for you :)
