Hello, I was recently admitted as a spring admit to Berkeley under the College of Letters and Science. My plan is to study courses that focus on pre-med; however, I also have a growing interest in business. If I were to change my mind, is it hard to go from L&S to Haas? What would I have to do during my freshman year to keep both options open? Is it at all possible? Thank you!

Nobody is admitted to Haas yet. People who said pre-business on their application were also put into L&S, so you’re in the same place as them right now. To keep both options open, you just have to take the prerequisites for both Haas and a biology major. Look them up and see what you can AP out of, but for pre-business you’ll need UGBA 10, Math 1A/1B, Stats 20/21, and for pre-med you’ll need Math 1A/1B, Chem 1A, Chem 3A/3B, Bio 1A, Physics 8A/8B.

I was in a similar place as you when I started at Berkeley, thinking I had to pick between pre-med and pre-business. Maybe you will go one of those routes, or you’ll take some other interesting classes or try research and discover a whole bunch of new career options! So keep your mind and your options open, take a few random courses that seem interesting, and welcome to Berkeley :)

Note that no particular major is required for pre-med, so you can theoretically take the pre-med courses alongside any other major including business, although medical schools supposedly frown on obviously preprofessional majors like business as opposed to liberal arts majors like economics, psychology, math, or statistics.

I’ve also heard that they’s changing up the MCAT for the 2015 test to reflect more humanities-ish stuff like psych. I’m not pre-med so didn’t really bother to look it up, but that may influence courses you take? Don’t know how all that works though.

Hey! Thanks for your post, it’s really helping me figure this all out!

You seem very informed so I had a quick question for clarification.

I was also admitted into the college of L+S, and my number one choice for a undergraduate program is business. So to get into the Haas school of business for a business undergrad program, what I must do is take the required classes? Do you know what the selection process is as to who they allow into the business school?

Thank you so much!

All the information you need should be on here: [Prerequisites, Undergraduate Program, Berkeley-Haas](<a href=“Application Process - Undergraduate Program - Berkeley Haas”>Application Process - Undergraduate Program - Berkeley Haas)

Basically just take the required classes your first two years. They’re difficult and you want to get good grades, so space them out appropriately. Build up your resume a bit by interning somewhere the first summer or doing something leadership related. Then apply! It’s not really that selective, just get good grades and write a convincing essay for why you should get in.

Thanks for all the helpful information! I’ll be sure to take classes that will allow me to choose either. Hopefully I’ll know what career to pursue when I get there! :)
