<p>What do they actually mean?</p>

<p>I know they send them out to people who get decent SAT scores but I dont know anything beyond that.</p>

<p>Lets say I get a letter from Brown.....does that mean I have a decent shot at getting in or what?</p>

<p>I searched for it but no luck.</p>

<p>I've always wanted to know.</p>

<p>Absolutely nothing except that you checked some box when taking a test saying that colleges could contact you.</p>

<p>Mike: it means your tests matched a certain logarithm that said you MIGHT be a viable candidate. It’s all marketing. Does Brown send out 1000 letters. Not likely. Maybe 40,000? Probably more in the ball park. Maybe even more.</p>
