So in the past year or so, Cornell has sent me letters encouraging me to apply. I'm black, a URM obviously, and from Louisiana. Anyway, I bubbled the whole can colleges send you stuff through the mail thing on the ACT so I'm assuming thats how they got my info. My question is this: Is this really Cornell pushing URMs to apply or is it some computer generated statistical letter sent to people who meet X, Y, and Z criteria? Thanks!

i get all that stuff too, as well as emails. i think the answer to your question is both.

they're pushing URMs to apply, but i think they just send it to any minority with an SAT/ACT score higher than "X", like 1700 or something. and the more minorities that apply, the more qualified minorities they will find and be able to admit.

i'd weigh your options...look at the cornell website and go through their majors and what curriculums each major has...

if you're looking to go pre-med then do realize that pre-med at cornell will be harder than pre-med at a state or smaller school...

in other words, cornell will be tough but it looks good for cornell to recruit and accept URMs...they know they risk not being able to retain you but if you give it your all you should make it through...
