Letters of Assurance

Can someone please explain to me how exactly this process works?

Once admissions has, at the very least, your PCQ, and a transcript with 6 semesters of grades you could receive an LOA from admissions. The LOA will state that based on that information you are assured an offer of admission IF you complete your application, IF you qualify medically, IF you pass the PAE, and IF you receive a nomination. Most LOA's are probably issued after the complete application is sent in, but a few are issued earlier. The LOA states a date by which your application materials must be received by the academy or it will be rescinded. Hope that helps.

Woohoo! I got one today! I got one! I'm so excited! I've been running around screaming the past hour or so! YES!!! I keep having to tell myself to breath! The letter says the only thing I have to do now is get a nomination. They reserved a cadetship for me! AHHHH!

Hooray!!! Congratulations. Well deserved. Make sure you send a copy to your MOCs.

marines4me,

your name seems to contradict the fact that you want to go to westpoint. (ya know "marines"...westpoint=army)...but whatever. I got a call from an admissions person yesterday telling me i was in if i filled out all the crap. my dad, a retired army reservist, was ecstatic...too bad the army is extremely rough and "manly". anyway...good luck..hope you know what your getting into.

btw...its funny how the recruiters are like "we pay for everything" but fail to tell you you have to serve 5 years in the army afterwards.

Thanks KateLewis! I just got back from a celebration diner!

Coqui, I know my name seems to contradict West Point. But I plan to cross-commission (unless I'm converted to the Army side while I'm there) to the Marines. And I don't know that anyone can truly know what they're getting into. I've read all the books out there, so I think I at least have some idea of it. Where else are you applying?

coqui

Make sure it's what you want, not just what your parents want. Someone who wants to go to West Point WANTS to serve in the army as a commissioned officer. No one is dragged there kicking and screaming. An admissions officer can't "guarantee" admission--you need to do a couple of very important things besides "filling out all the crap"--namely passing the PAE, being qualified medically, and getting a nomination.
Good Luck with your college plans.

oh. i forgot to mention i'm not applying. i've been a military brat all my life (my mom retired form active duty air force a couple weeks ago) and i really don't see myself having so much discipline. i will say its awesome to live on an air force base. its a secure community, the bx (base exchange) is like a mall, but cheaper prices. there's also no tax on base and there's everthing you'd need in a few miles radius..like a library, bowling alley, teen center, shopping mall, golf course...anything.

i love being a military dependent, i just don't want to be the sponsor. i've told all my friends applying that they should go only bc they really want to.

marines4me, props to you for wanting to go into the military. if you like it, it'll be awesome.

btw, if you're a guy, maybe i can marry you and become a dependent again, b/c all my privileges expire when i turn 21 (which isnt for a few years). damn, i'm such a moocher.

oh, and the good stuff goes for the army bases (or "forts") b/c i've lived on those too.

Just found out one of my teachers didn't send in the evaluation form until today. Any chance of still getting an LOA? And how long after USMA receives everything do they send some response...?

Marines4me just got hers this week, so yes, there is a chance. Good luck!

i still haven't gotten my LOA... but i have the "99% magic umbrealla" tell me how bad this sounds... i applied last year. i got differed to a civilian prep school for a year because my med waiver was a week late. the only way that i won't make it into the academy for class 2009 is if i fail out of every class or if i don't make it medically... AOG-ship is great... i suggest that if somebody ends up getting offered the AOG scholarship take it. totally worth it. and west point already said that they have 60 spots reserved for the 60 AOG preps that they sent to civilian prep schools. 20 to nmmi and the rest to Marion, Wentworth, and Valleyforge... but soon i too will be dancing around the house with my LOA... :)

any one know anything about the acceptance rate for IAW attendees?

Don't know the acceptance rate for IAW but would heartily recommend the summer program for all interested candidates. The week-long program helped our son validate his interest in West Point.

About 1 out of 2, worst 1 out of 3, I think. PSAT's above 60 and comparable GPA/EC's should do it.

I know about 50% of the people who attened the IAW report to the academy as plebes the next year. b/c I guess some people decide not to attend an academy, or go to another academy, anyone know anyhting about the usually acceptance rates of the pp who actually atteneded the IAW?
