Letters of Rec

How do I attach letters of recommendation with the college app? Or even when just applying online?

for common app schools if you school does not use naviance you will go to the school forms section, waive your rights, add your teachers and then select teachers for each of your schools. This is all done on line. They will get an email shortly after you select them, so be sure to talk to them about this before you do that. They will then use the online process to submit their recommendations directly through the common app process. You can keep track of their progress through your common app account online.

What if some of my letters arent from teachers?

also, to request for teacher’s recommendation online, do you have to wait until you are completely done with your application? What if I’m even close to being done yet, but teachers are asking for my resume and stuff?

you do not (and should not) wait until your whole app is done to invite your recommenders. If you are going to submit supplemental recs (not from teachers and in addition to the ones that the school requires) you should start with the faq on the common app or contact the school directly to ask about what they’d like. a lot of schools discourage sending in more than the required number of recs.

So you put your signature and date in and press the big scary SUBMIT button on the School Forms page, even if you aren’t done the rest of your application. Or will this submit your application?!!

yes press that button. this definitely only sends the email to your teachers and you still have the rest of the app to work on.

Thank you so much Griffen… I wish the HS would just write a simple clear instruction like you did. We just hear go to Naviance, and then we all suffer with this great cloud of mystery!

Yeah, thanks griffen!

Can you only assign two teachers per school on the common app? I am sending three teachers to the schools that have said that is ok; do I have to send the third rec through the mail?

Some of my schools ask for one teacher rec and some ask for two. I thought that a third recommender might be a problem and I was all set to do the whole envelope and stamps thing with my debate/speech teacher, but it turns out I’ve been able to add him as an additional teacher to all my schools. Seems to be working. Try it - might work for you.

I actually printed out the teacher recommendation forms and physically handed them to my teachers. My guidance counselor told me to have them write them that way and then return them to her and she will send them. Now I don’t understand what to do for the section where I have to add my teacher’s emails… help?
