Letters of Recommendation Question

Hello everyone, I'm not sure whether to post this here, but I am applying for a PhD in Math in US schools for admission hopefully in fall 2012. I just finished my degree at a UK university.

I am a bit confused about who to ask for a letter of recommendation however. Here are my 5 candidates for a LOR:

1) My student advisor, who is the head of the department of Mathematics, who I don't have an amazing relationship with but he has deliberated over who decides who wins prizes in the department

2) My lecturer in Galois theory, an advanced course, who I have a good relationship with and have been to his office several times to discuss advanced topics, and I did well in his course

3) My "research" project supervisor over the summer where I did some independent reading and wrote up a set of notes. I don't have an amazing relationship with him but he does have knowledge of how able I am to do independent work

4) My final year project supervisor, who I get on with spectacularly well and with whom assisted me on making a final project on algebraic topology and category theory, and I also did a high level course with him (linear algebra and functional analysis ) which I did well in.

5) A lecturer who I did a course on Lebesgue Integration and Measure Theory with that I did well in, spent many hours in his office discussing the material and I did well in his course

I would really appreciate some advice about which 3 to pick. I think #4 is an obvious choice but I'm not so sure about the others. I hope you don't think I am bragging or anything, I really just want some advice. Thanks very much :)

Oh my, this is from quite a while ago. Yes, I do think that 4 is an obvious choice. As for your other two…well, 2 and 5 are similar, but I would go with 2. And between 1 and 3, I think you should pick 3.

So, 2, 3, and 5.

Hope this response isn’t too late.
