Letters of Recommendation - Question

How many letters of recommendation are required? How do I submit these letters of recs? Are they submitted via the online application portal, or do I tell my teachers to mail them in?

Are these letter of recs from counselors or letter of recs from teachers? Super confused as to how these all work. Help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

I’m guessing you’re in high school? The UT application site should tell you, but I think the recommenders mail it directly to admissions.

The letters can be from any one, basically, but it’s best if they’re teachers from the subject closest to your major or a club sponsor who knows you well. Counselors are okay, but bring a resume with you when you speak to them, because most of them have these “ad lib” letters of recommendation.

Recommendations are not required for UT (unless you are doing an honors program, and it depends on which one). You can use it to supplement your app, but it is by no means necessary (I don’t even think there’s a spot for it on the application).

Hey, if it can help me out, why not? :)

Does anyone know how much of an impact recs have on admissions?

You don’t want to annoy admissions by sending them unnecessary materials. They go through thousands of thousands of applications, so additional paperwork that is generic is useless to them. I’d say recs for UT hold almost no weight with the exception of oos students, bhp, and borderline cases (but only if the rec is clearly sincere. Lots of teachers repeat the resume, and that gets to be very annoying for admissions). So unless you can get a teacher to write “this is the most amazing kid I’ve ever had in my last 30 years of teaching…I remember two years ago she/he did this and I’ll never forget it”, you’re better off not having one.

Letters of recommendations are not required but highly recommended. We were told so 4 times on 4 different occasions while visiting 3 different departments/colleges.

Letters are mailed.

My daughter asked 3 teachers for recommendation letters and provided them with a stamped envelope with UT address, she also gave them her UT ID to mention in the letter so it would be easier to find her file.
