Letters of Recommendation - When/How to Ask?

So I've got a sort of conundrum. I'm a college freshman right now, at a very respectable university, but I was looking to transfer to a school with a better program for undergraduate science research.

My problem is that I wanted to wait until finals were over, and my first semester grades were in, to ask professors because in the event that I did not have good enough grades I did not want to waste anyone's time. So, finals are over and I've got the grades to transfer, but it's winter break right now.

My question is this: I've got several professors I could ask for recommendations, but should I do this in person (we go back on January 6th), or should I email them now to give them time to write it?

I’d recommend you wait until you return to school in Jan and ask in person. With the holidays, your email request may not be very well received and it is unlikely to be worked on over the next few weeks anyway.
