letters of recommendation

how do you go about asking a professor? which ones should one ask? professors from smaller classes or are large lecture ones ok?

also what should you give a professor in order for them to write about you?

I would ask people who know you well. It might be easier to ask professors from smaller classes, but there is nothing wrong with asking ones in larger lectures, especially if you frequently go to office hours and talk to them after class. I would just tell them that you would like a recommendation, and give them at least a few weeks to write it. I guess you could give them your resume or something, but ideally they would be able to write something meaningful about you based on knowing you.
