Letters of Recommendation

The transfer application for my school doesnt require any letters of recommendations, personal statements or extracurricular activities. I was wondering if i should or should not send them in anyway to give me a better chance at getting in. (I will be a sophomore transfer)

I've already asked two of my professors to send in letters of recommendations on my behalf. The fsu website says they dont req. LORs but doesnt not specify whether or not they are optional or do not send em in at all.

I was in quite a few extracurriculars & leadership positions in high school & now in college.

What do you guys think? Would sending these things in hurt my chances?

My grades are as follows :
English - A
Public Myths - A
Macroeconomics - A-
Gender, race, class - A- / B+
Algebra - C- / D
University Seminar- Pass

PS I'm really worred about my grade in Algebra- How would it affect my chances?

As a sophmore transfer most colleges will look heavily into your high school grades - how was your GPA then? Or put another way, does your HS profile fit what FSU normally would take as a college freshman? If so, they might overlook the Algebra grade. If your HS profile is weak for FSU, that Algebra grade in my opinion (I am not an admissions officer) would be a bit of a warning flag.

On the bright side, your other classes look good and the A- in Macroeconomics is a good counter to the Algebra grade.

Many colleges require a class BEYOND Algebra… are you taking another math course?

I think you should just keep the idea of a junior transfer as a back up plan in case you don’t get into your transfer college of choice. You should look up if your transfer college requires a certain college-level math and if so what qualifies (sometimes a C is required) to even be eligible to transfer. If it isn’t a transfer req, then it may work out anyhow.

this is really nerve racking
i do not want to attend my university next semester (it is completely out of the question for me… i dread walking into that damn building everyday & it takes every fiber of my being just to attend class)

but i will be taking finite math next semester.

do you think the LORs & a short personal statement will help cushion the D? -.-"

I believe my high school GPA was a 3.0 (though i am not too sure)

algebra is rather low. are you sure it’ll even transfer?

not too sure. if not, i might just retake the class at a CC over the summer.

What I am sensing from this short thread is that the OP needs to just start hunting down hard facts.

1) Get your HS transcript and know your GPA.
2) Compare your HS GPA with the middle 50% of the FSU and other target transfer schools and just know if you are in that target, a bit higher or a bit lower. And if it is a LOT lower, for a sophomore transfer, look for other transfer schools that are a closer fit (ie: matches vs. just reaches).
3) Know the transfer-math requirements for each transfer school. They are often very specific of what level is required AND what minimum grade will allow it to transfer.

And finally, if you struggled a lot in Algebra you may want to get a tutor now, even before spring starts, and work through the Finite Math principals.
