Letters of Recommendations?

So I've completed my first year in college and the semester has just ended. However, I'm still contemplating as to whether I should ask my professors for letters of recommendation. I have done well in their classes and they have insisted that I request them in any instance that I would need one. However, I currently do not need these letters for any particular purpose nor do they need to be any specific format, but they most likely be useful in the future. I'm wondering if I should still ask my professors so that they will be able to clearly remember and reference the things I've done? Even if the content of the LORs are generalized and not written for anything specific?

Thanks in advance.

Wait. If they truly admired your work in their class, you can come back and get a specific letter anytime you need it. Just make sure you give them enough notice!
