How time consuming are the Category classes (the ones without the associated required writing class)? Do they tend to be easier than your major?

you mean GEs? they all fit some theme, category 6 goes with writing 140. it is under the category of Social Issues classes and has a wide range, for most people they aren't especially difficult but since they aren't in their major they don't like them/try as hard as they do in the major classes.

Other than Category 6, are the other GEs generally time consuming or easy? Thanks so much.

My son wants to take the remaining GEs over the summer at USC. He wants to focus on Engineering and minor courses during the year thinking that the GEs take up too much time. I don't want to spend that kind of tuition money over the summer. Since Engineering and related Engineering classes can be time consuming, I am trying to find out if the GEs are light in comparison or very time consuming classes.

For example, I remember, years ago when I was an undergrad at UCLA, taking a Jazz class outside my major. It was an enjoyable, fun and easy class. I wonder if the GEs are like taking an enjoyable music class or are they hours and hours of outside reading/papers to write.

I enjoyed almost all of the GEs that I took at USC. Your son needs to go through each category and find a course that interests him. If you enjoy the topic of a class, I feel like it won't be as hard.

Also, as a senior in engineering at USC, I would not recommend taking GEs over the summer. It's nice to have a GE during the course of a semester because it gets you away from the engineering curriculum. The only time I took a summer course was for Chemistry and I took it at a community college where I paid $100 for the summer instead of $4000+ that USC would require.

In my opinion, the GE's are some of my most time consuming classes- and it's even more awful because they're normally not something you are interested in because it's not for your major. Although I don't think I would take them during the summer because it's so expensive, they aren't light easy classes- my GE's are harder than any of the classes I`m taking for anything else. Especially categories 1 & 2, those are the ones rumored to be the most boring.

To KHans: May I ask are you majoring in a field which does not show up in the GEs? For example, if you are a business student, there do not appear to be GEs in the business school.

That's correct. I am a PR Major. So I guess I would have to clarify my post by saying that these are topics that have nothing to do with my major...
