Leventhal School of Accounting

I was wondering how is the Leventhal School of Accounting? (grade curve, type of students, faculty, class difficulty, work load, and etc)

I believe the grade curve at Leventhal is 3.15, which is a hell of a lot better than the ghastly Marshall curve of 2.85. The accounting school runs on their own quarter-like system and from what I hear is fairly intense. The students are very competitive, but at the same time everyone seems to get along. The Big 4 seem to love the Leventhal kids cause they are always on campus and are trying to recruit. A few people I know have been taken out in limos and treated to nice restaurants in an effort to join their firm. Lucky!

The one major complaint I hear about the school is that it is too corporate oriented. They say they try to mold you into the ideal recruiting candidate, which I guess is cool for some, but not so for others.

i may be switching my major from biz admin to accounting. the school is wayyy corporate oriented, i feel that is what i want right after i graduate.

anyways, a Leventhal degree will make you a very strong candidate, inside or outside of socal. it comes at a price, i hear classes are general harder and students are generally smarter(more compittition). my opinion is that the faculty is leventhals strongest asset.

Corporate oriented sounds good to me and I definetly like the higher curve.

From what I heard, Leventhal only has around 200 students. Does that mean Leventhal is competitive to get in or there just aren't too many accounting majors?

Also, if I get in to Leventhal, would I still take any classes at marshall?

If you're not directly admitted into the business school you have to 1st get into the business school. Then you have to maintain a minimum of 3.0 average and no lower than a B- average in your two lower division accounting courses (250a - Financial Accounting & 250b - Managerial Accounting).

Sounds easy, but the Marshall curve is 2.85 so you do have to put in some work. Also I suggest you pick your group VERY wisely in 250b because a bad group can cost you BIG time. Come to class early the day you pick your group (mine was the 1st day) and scan the room for the ones that look driven and smart. It will save you a LOT of stress.

Yes you will be taking your core business courses at Marshall before you even get into Leventhal.

Wow the 250b sounds kind of hard.
Is there an one major case study/group presentation in 250b?

Luckily, I am transfering to Marshall and have done most of my core business classes. Also, I have taken two accounting classes that is equivalent to the 250ab classes. So they told me I need to take the 305x accounting bridge class to get in to leventhal. Does anyone know how the 305x class is, since I need to get B or better?

Sirdeuce,

250b on the whole isn't too difficult, however there are three projects/presentations that much be done with the same group. So if you discover during your first project that your group has poor work habits, it's going to be a long semester.

yup... i personally liked 250b more than 250a, but i had a bad group so i had many sleepless nights
