LGBT club at UCSB?

I am looking at a list of clubs at UCSB and I noticed there isn't any clubs for LGBT students like GSA. Why is that?

and related question.. what is the gay scene at ucsb and the place in general like?

I know that there is a “Rainbow” special interest dorm or something like that. It’s one of the buildings in Manazita village. From the housing website:

Rainbow House
This house is a supportive residential community for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students (GLBT) and their allies. The Rainbow House is committed to providing a specifically “gay-friendly” atmosphere for students to live and interact. The house exists to provide GLBT students and allies a housing option where their sexual orientation will be celebrated. The Rainbow House is committed to providing a safe space for any student to visit when facing challenges in their life in regards to their sexuality such as roommate problems or coming out issues. The Rainbow House will also serve as a social outlet for GLBT students and allies.
41 spaces in Manzanita Village

There were fliers and I think a booth about it at Spring Insight. :)

There isn’t a GSA but there is a Queer Student Union and meets on Tuesdays from 7 pm-8 pm in the MultiCultural center Meeting room. They have a facebook group in case you want to get more info from them.

Personally I don’t know what the gay scene is like, I have friends who are gay but that’s it really. People here are very open-minded though and during the November elections there were many people advocating for No on 8 and there even was an emergency prop 8rally. QSU is also having a Pride Week '09 beginning April 26. Sorry I can’t be of any more help. :]

Ahh that was helpful.

Question about the themed dorms. Are those dorms labeled with their theme? So like, would a dorm says “Rainbow House” on its door?

see, I might apply for it but I don’t want my mom to know I live in one when she visits me or something lmao xD

On the doors no, most of the time on the doors the RA puts up the names of each resident atleast in most halls i’ve been in. There might be welcome posters in the hall during the first few week with the floors theme on it as well as other things that lets it be known that it’s a themed dorm. I guess it depends on the RA and what they put up before your arrival. Though if your mom helps you move in she might find out.

Yeah, UCSB is pretty open-minded. Santa Barbara county voted against Prop 8, largely because of the student population there. Even if you did not dorm in the Rainbow House, I don’t think you’d encounter much hostility. :)

Yeah, SB in general is open minded. You’ll be completely fine. One of my best friends is lesbian.

lol i don’t even know you or your mom but I can just imagine your mom walking in the Rainbow House.
I have a question; in LGBT housing is it single-sex rooms or co-ed? (Just curious)

did that make sense?

i second SSarahS’s question.

Technically all dorms are coed except specific floors like the all women’s floor. In one wing (L- shaped in my dorm hall) are the girls and on the other are the boys.

Peanuty, here is something I think you’ll find informative. There will be a lot of support and like minded people with you, don’t worry. I read the stuff under Resources >> On Campus and there are other groups/places available to you to meet people if you are afraid your parents will find out!

Thanks dissonance!

and lostinmotion, are there any dorms in which different sexes share a single room, or are all rooms single sexes

Sorry, different sexes aren’t allowed to share a room. My friends and I tried to apply for a university owned apartment (2 girls and 2 boys) but we weren’t allowed to sign up to live in the same apartment  So yeah it’s single sex rooms.

haha that is so lame, i assume they are afraid if guy and girl can share the same room, they’ll have sex all day?!?!

yet gay guys and lesbians can share the same room, rofl…

that doesnt seem right
