LGBT Friendly School with Merit Scholarships?

@merething, my son’s applying to Princeton (already had an interview,) Yale, Harvard, and Rutgers-NB. (Brown had been on the list, but we worried about the town’s crime rate. I’ve heard bad things about New Haven too though.) He was going to apply to Rider as a safety school, but with the recent elimination of a 12 majors, we’re afraid other cuts might be made. Now we’re looking at more meet & safety schools, with TCNJ, Farleigh-Dickinson (metro campus,) Franklin & Marshall, & Montclair. It’s been such a hectic year, that we’re behind on searches. We’ll look at more suggested in this thread.

Some of our other search criteria is a racially diverse and campus as our son isn’t white. The school also has to be within a day’s drive should he be attacked and need us.

I love that you started this thread. It’s been hard to find colleges where both the campus and town are accepting. No place will be 100% safe, but my son should be able to go on a date off campus and not worry the entire time that he’ll be attacked just for holding hands with his bf.

May I ask if you’ve done a search for colleges with LGBTQIA+ or gender neutral housing? That’s next on the To Do List. It’s one of the first things we check out when we go to a college’s website, but having a list (aside from Campus Pride’s) would help.

Sorry for typos. Left hand is injured.

Anyone have any more ideas?

@FarscapeFan, this is probably moot, since my guess is Brown’s app deadline was the 1st, but Brown is in a very nice part of Providence, and I would not characterize it as crime-ridden or dangerous. In fact, Thayer St, right by Brown, is one of the nicest easy-walk-from-campus hopping streets full of fun shops, cafes and restaurants that you’ll find anywhere.

@merething Hey there! I’m trans bisexual too and was looking for LGBTQ friendly colleges as well! A college that immediately comes to mind is Hampshire College. Its very liberal, and very LGBTQ friendly. Not sure how big their merit scholarships are, but they are renewable.

@frenchtoastlover Thank you for the suggestion!
