Hi, my younger sister just got accepted and I'm curious as to what the LGBT life is like there. She came out a year ago and hasn't had any problems so far. However, she wants to go out of state next year and is favoring UNC Chapel over the other OOS schools she got accepted to. I'm just wondering if anyone can give some information about what the LGBT scene is like.

ok, first of all…what in the world does LGBT stand for. If it’s a universal code, then please explain to me as I happen to be one of the few illiterates out there without the capability of comprehending solely the acronyms shown here.

LGBT is a universal code. It means Lesbian, Gay, Bi, and Transgender.

To the OP- I’ve heard the UNC is a really accepting place. Your sister should not be worried.

Is there an LGBT organization on campus? And are they fairly active at all?

She will have no problems, there is an active and vibrant gay community at UNC and overall the school is very welcoming and accepting. One of my son’s housemates was gay and there were several other gay and bi females in their circle of friends.

Yes, there is an active LBGT organization on campus.

Thanks! I think I’m more worried about her than she is.

I do not think she will have any problems.

She should not have any trouble. The LGBTQ office here is great, and Terri Phoenix, the head is fantastic. Beyond that, there is GBLTSA, which is the student organization for LGBT students (and heterosexual students too!). The LGBTQ office also sponsors a program called Safe Zone that gives anyone who wants to the opportunity to be more informed about different sexual orientations, and become an “Ally”.

Basically, your sister should have very few problems.

Agree 100%, no problems. (Though as I think I mentioned before, straight girls are taking over all the gay bars…)

^ Haha I can attest to the fact that the LGBT scene on campus is pretty awesome, which is one of the reasons I chose Carolina. There a lot of LGBT, particularly the “L” and the “G”, coming from my school to Carolina next year as well. She won’t be alone I think she’ll be okay!
