Hi everyone, I'm going to be a freshman in fall 2012 and I am wondering what the LGBT scene is like at UT Austin. I'm probably going to be dorming in San Jacinto or Duren if I get my preferences and I tried googling for LGBT clubs and whatnot but they seem to be for law students or more career-oriented. I'm a bisexual girl and I don't have any LGBT friends so I'm looking forward to meeting similar people, but I'm at a loss as to how to even meet them in the first place because I don't know any clubs or social events that happen in UT.

Start with QSA–queer students alliance. There’s also HangOut and StandOut groups here on campus.

Austin as a community is fairly warm as far as climate toward LGBTQ individuals. I would say the campus can be a bit more chilly–the faculty and staff don’t have domestic partner benefits here, which gets addressed in rallies about every year.

I would also take a look at the Gender and Sexuality website on utexas.edu. They are a great starting point for students as well, and can get you integrated into the community through events and clubs, etc.

There are Organizations for every interest in the LGBTQ community here at UT. There are queer clubs for games, movies, activism, sports, business, and more. There is the Gender and Sexuality Center which is a common safe place for all queer/ally students. You can check out QSA’s website which lists a majority of the orgs. hope this helps

Also, if you want to talk about literal CLUBS. Like partying in da club. lol – There are plenty downtown where I am sure you can meet LGBTs. This is definitely a friendly city, contrary to the rest of Texas I would say.

You’ll find out in due time that you are most definitely not alone at UT.

Another sidenote, was that I was surprised in a good way was to notice that there are gay and lesbian members in the greek system. I guess I didn’t expect that, but it’s a good progressive thing to see! Despite that the numbers aren’t very many. They are there!

I have a lot of friends who had a blast at the Pride parade. They all love it here. So I’m assuming it’s pretty active.
