LGBT student looking for advice about schools

hey
I am a gay asian at Foothill College in the SF Bay. It is my first quarter but I am thinking about schools to transfer to to get fully prepared.
Currently i have SAT 2100
First Quarter GPA: 4.0 (ESLL, MATH, BIOL)
Toefl: 105
SATII Math2 800 I am thinking about taking physics too.
I am a science student and wanna apply as a applied math and cs major.
However, considering my sexuality, I do need to select some schools that are lgbt-friendly and also have decent lgbt student population... coz dating, school life are important to me ........ tho i am very serious about education.

my family can support my education financially but i will certainly get a part-time job and try to be independent, due to the reality that I will really be kicked out of the family I come out... BUT who knows....... we will see......

I do not have very clear and thorough ideas about universities and LACs and would be easier if I can have all the info I need in the comments below.... instead of looking for posts one by one.....
i like city life for sure,as a gay... schools close to city also work....

thank you!!!

Are you an international student? TOEFL implies that; if you are a US citizen or permanent resident, do you have California residency? What kind of price limit are you looking at?

It would have been better if you had been able to get a full ride merit scholarship somewhere as a frosh to be completely independent of your parents’ money (in order to avoid worrying about being disowned by them), though that would have been harder to get if you are an international student or your high school GPA was low.

Obvious transfer targets for CS include UCs and CSUs, including UCB, UCSC, and SJSU, all of which are near Silicon Valley and its mostly-LGB-friendly computer companies.

http://www.assist.org will help you match up Foothill College courses to those of various UCs and CSUs that you may transfer to.

<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST;
<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST;
<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST;

As you can see, Foothill College covers the prerequisites for CS well for UCSC and SJSU, but poorly for UCB. If you transfer to UCB, you will have to take several “catch up” courses after transfer. You can look up other transfer target schools or other community colleges at http://www.assist.org . Laney College and Diablo Valley College tend to have better coverage of courses for UCB.

Why don’t you wait ubtil you graduate to come out, if you might be kicked out of the family.

You can use the “Supermatch” tool on the left sidebar of your screen to find schools that are known for being LGBT-friendly.

If you want to stay in California, most schools are going to be a fit for you in that way. As long as you stay away from religious campuses (Pepperdine, Catholic schools) you should be able to find an LGBT-friendly campus. I’d also stay away from UC Irvine – although it probably has gay student organizations, etc., it’s still known as the most conservative of the UC campuses.

But in general, California schools are pretty progressive. I’d start there.

UCI has a large gay population and is very supportive of the LGB community (I don’t know any transpersons at UCI, so I can’t comment on the last letter). Besides, it’s in the middle of Orange County which substantially increases the dating population since the OP wouldn’t be stuck with just the UCI dating pool as would be the case if he went to Merced.

Additionally there are plenty of Catholic schools in California where being gay would be about as much an issue as being Asian at UCI. University of San Francisco, University of San Diego, St. Mary’s College of CA all immediately come to mind as very gay friendly schools. The only CA Catholic schools I can think of where the OP might feel uncomfortable are Thomas Aquinas College, Mount Saint Mary’s College, Marymount, and Notre Dame de Namur.

thanks for advice.
I certainly plan to come out after I have a stable relationship and get employed in USA. for now, since my family has the ability to support my education, i will try my best to get in fantastic schools and won’t worry much about cost. I will pay my family back. :slight_smile:

the choices are not limited to CA even though I will probably come back finally, but who knows. If lucky enough, I get in good schools outside CA, i will certainly go for that!!

hey thanks for advice
I am an International student… and certainly i don’t aim at financial aid.
I think I do not really like UC schools, since too many asians ( I suppose most them are Chinese), I am chinese myself but I do not like to hang out with most of the Chinese… my friend who is a student at UCB and she is just like me, not interested in being with Chinese, but due to the large number of Chinese there, she is criticized since she always spends time with white students, well any people other than chinese…the choices are not limited to CA even though I will probably come back to CA finally, but who knows. If lucky enough I get in good schools outside CA, i will certainly go for that!!

You can try and see if you can transfer into HarveyMudd. SJSU is a given (safety if you keep an A average, even for CS), and UCSC too. UWA is very competitive for CS and has many Chinese students, but you could look into it due to its quality for CS and for gay life. If you want schools where there are fewer Chinese students, you may want to try schools in the Midwest and South, or aren’t as highly ranked - but that may displease your parents - I’m thinking Case Western Reserve, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities (gay friendly, excellent STEM fields, lots of Forutne 500 in the Twin Cities), UIUC would have many Chinese students but since you’re full pay and they’re terrific for CS, it’d be too bad if you didn’t try, UMass Amherst (good for CS, not sure about Chinese students), RPI (not sure how gay-friendly it is), URochester, Marist?

The good news is that virtually every respected college will have a well established LGBTQ organization and at least “official” school support. Best of luck to you–and I’m very sorry your family is unaccepting. That must be really difficult.

Why didn’t you go directly to a 4 year? You have good stats, it appears. As a CCC student you will be well positioned for transfer to one of the UC, you may have a range of choices and all should be LGBT friendly. Are you also looking for outside CA transfers?

@BrownParent‌ hi, i wasn’t that a good student when was in high school in china. i mean, I had good grades but i did not plan to study abroad. thus When i realized that i want to come to USA, it would be too late and i did not have time to get prepared. Finally, i got in SFSU, a state university and tried to transfer from there. However, that time I even did not know that Community college is the way to transfer. and no one told me that either. but later I found out myself and decided that i need to go to a community college, since SFSU doesn’t really support transfer and they don’t have a good system for that. I kept the dean’s list in my previous university, 3.85 for two semesters and now i am at community college, i aim for more, the highest honor at school.
I do know UCs are great but I do not really like them for personal reasons… i like the school has lower proportion of chinese student body… i will apply for one or two UCs as safety but I don’t think i will go there. UCB is probably too selective and might not even get in.
And, of course, i am also looking for schools out of CA, either universities or liberal arts colleges that have good science program and graduate employment rate. my dreams schools are Stanford, and harvey mudd, both of them are in CA tho. These two are too selective to get in but I will try.

@marvin100‌ hi Marvin,luckily I can keep the secret to my friends and myself for at least one decade, haha,that time, i will be independent enough to make the decision myself. my patents will be upset for sure, but they want me to be happy (but by doing what they want). but the ultimate goal is the same, and only i know what is happiness to me and what i really want. If I can show how successful I will be but as a gay, they won’t be so disappointed, i think. And for now, i even want to be the top student on campus but as a gay! :)

Keep fighting the good fight, @kev9532

If money isn’t a major concern, then NYU would be an obvious choice.

McGill University in Montreal, if you are willing to live in Canada for 4 years would be a great fit, big LGBT community with very active nightlife in that city, and the university is right downtown, with a very diverse student population. Depending on what program you apply to prices range from between $17 700 (Arts) to about #32 000 (Science, Engineering) and $35 000 (Business)

@woogzmama‌ i was considering NYU and i love NYC a lot!!! but it doesn’t offer good science program ( cs and math, general science)… only applied mathematics there is amazing…

@MYOS1634‌ I think i will also add UCB into my list even though there are so many siblings…coz there is a gat frat… and so many gay students… i just talked to a gay student from UCB, he said gay life there is amazing. OMG!! and it has good cs and science program for sure.

@NamelesStatistic‌ hey thanks for advice. but i think i will stay in USA for undergraduate. :slight_smile: but i will definitely go visit McGill!!! since it is amazing!
