My high school junior has two keen interests: he wants to attend a great liberal arts college, but he also wants to continue to study cello. He's not really interested in majoring in music -- his current interests are more along the lines of political science and history -- but he wants to go to a school with decent orchestra offerings or opportunities. Any recommendations?

There are hundreds of schools that would fit. Can you narrow it down a bit by location, size, his likely GPA, SAT scores, etc?

Go to the Music Major forum and do some searching. There are multiple threads about this very thing. Lots of great advice. For everyone interested in any aspect of music in college, not just majoring.

Lawrence and Oberlin both have great conservatories but have excellent music scenes in their non-conservatory colleges as well.

A recent thread from this forum and some links to a number of prior discussions within the music major forum: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/785184-small-schools-strong-music.html

A number of the folks within the music major forum can be of great help. There is intimate and in depth knowledge of a variety of programs (for virtually any level) or discipline.

Beloit (im at it, interested in politics and history, play the flute in orchestra and flute choir), Knox, Lawrence, Luther, St. Olaf, Illinois Wesleyan.

Connecticut College has a decent music program, and their music lessons are free to all students.
