I know that Cal Poly SLO is known for it’s engineering… but how is the Liberal Arts program? I’m planning on majoring in English.

I am a HS Senior, so I am only going off of what I have read/heard from other people here in CC, but Cal Poly is supposedly only good for Engineering. All other majors are simple above-average (when compared to other CSUs).

I think you might have over looked Architecture which is ranked in the top 5 in the nation. Oh, and I hear the Business School isn’t half bad either. Look, there’s a lot more to Cal Poly than its excellent engineering program. Ultimately it will be what you make of it.

Gotpeter,

I know there’s more to Cal Poly SLO than just Engineering. I simply isolated that program as an example. What I am interested in are people’s opinions on their Liberal Arts (specifically English) programs.

yeah, I’ve been trying to ask around about the liberal arts programs also. I applied as an Environmental Anthropology major, which I thought was really weird because it was shoved in the liberal arts category along with all the other social sciences…
anyway, no one has a good answer for this LBA question.

well i believe the college of liberal arts has the smallest student body compared to the other colleges within cal poly, so the classes, especially upper level liberal arts courses will probably be much smaller compared to, perhaps, upper level engineering classes, etc. you’re professors will probably me more available also since the CLA student body isn’t really impacted like the other colleges. i don’t have much experience with classes in the CLA but i took a political science class and it was great. Very interesting and the professor was amazing. It was actually much more interesting than my required “major courses”… The CLA professors that I have met are knowledgeable about the subjects they study, although I am only a first year student…

A lot of times the college of liberal arts will have guest speakers, and movie showings etc that are really interesting too.

It really annoys me when people say that cal poly is only an engineering school. Yeah the engineering program is nationally ranked, but people shouldn’t dismiss or overlook the other programs that cal poly offers. That’s sort of like saying harvard is only good for law school, which is definitely not true…
