Any students or parents who can shed some light on the quality of the liberal arts courses offered at these art colleges? Thanks!

my kid’s friends from brain HS are quite bored at Pratt, but it can be a good thing. more time for other stuff.
SAIC used to be outsoursed to UChicago for liberal arts, but decided can do ourselves! and doing it ever since. there is no proof it is on per as one of top Us, as example of SMFA Tufts lip-service thing- but far as I know they are trying and more choices, more open than other art schools.
I know few brainmaniac SAIC BA or MA. can’t be all that bad.

Thanks. Can SAIC students still take classes at UChicago? Also, what do you know about merit scholarships at these two schools – any specifics?

don’t know for sure but I doubt it, it was my frined’s time, 40 years or so ago!!!
did you ask?

SAIC merit should come with acceptance. they’d add more if they want you bad enuff till very very end, like into summer, even.
22K is max, far as I know. usually for kids rather smart and killer conceptual works.
88K for 4 years but not doled out evenly.

Pratt’s max is presidential, 15 or 17K-sh. they give away quite many. far as I know it’s more academic oriented, since portfolio average is tend to be mediocre compare to MICA RISD.
most local commuters still can not afford it without hefty loans. I think it is treated more like discount, not scholarships. they can not do list-price too low like mid-tire artschools since being in NY, or people would doubt their reputation /quality. kind of sad, it is a great school for what it is.

I know the writing program at SAIC is very strong, they’ve produced some very well-regarded contemporary writers.

Thanks all. yes, D received high merit at Pratt, I think average at SAIC. Very torn. But was wondering about classes such as psychology, science, literature – are those like LAC classes? or really liberal arts geared to art? Has anyone been and taken these?

I think you can view SAIC’s LAC classes online, writing aside I believe they are generally geared towards art. If you can get through their website there should be a listing of classes offered this spring. Pratt I don’t know about, we never looked at it but it was one of the schools I dreamed about going to back when I was a student at a state art dept.

You know if you can’t get into their website why don’t you call them and request a copy of the classes offered, they must have a brochure or some such thing.
Might help in your decision making if this is important to you.

Yes – I have seen the course they offer, but wondered if Introduction to Psychology, for example, would be like Psych 101 or not.

I would suspect but can’t be sure it would be like a regular Psych class, the English classes aren’t “art-centric.” Where that starts playing in I believe are the science classes, like chemistry of art material types of classes. Do they offer math?

That makes a lot of sense – anyway, as far as math and science are concerned – I know it’s cliche but if they are arts oriented, that would be ok. But it would be nice if the social sciences and humanities were more traditional.
