Liberal Arts College Dance Major reviews

Hello,

I would like to see if anyone out there has input on programs that offer a BA in Dance at a liberal arts college and if they applied there. My daughter is looking at a few that I don’t see as much buzz about on here, specifically Conneticut College Bard, Muhlenberg and Bates. Connecticut College has an audition process for its majors. Wondering if anyone has input on theses programs or others you recommend.

What kind of dance?

Take a look at St Olaf, College of Wooster, and Dickinson (unusual in supporting high level for ballet due to relationship to CPYB). Muhlenberg, which you have already identified, is very strong in musical theater.

The 5 colleges consortium in MA also supports dance - I believe Smith is the strongest, but also check out offerings at Mt. Holyoke and U Mass (not an LAC) but consortium students can take classes there.

Contemporary and Modern, but she has strong training in ballet and jazz too. Anyone out there with input on Conneticut College dance?

@coridece - you might have better luck posting the question in the College-specific forum for CT College and Bates. If you don’t see a college mentioned on the Majors forums it’s probably because none of the regular posters are connected with that one school.

Two places that looked great to us were Sarah Lawrence and Eugene Lang/New School. Vassar also seems to have a great dance program, though I’m pretty sure you can’t major.

DD liked Goucher College and appreciated what the faculty had to say about their program. At the end of the day, however, it wasn’t focused enough on classical ballet and so she ruled it out as a choice.

One of my daughter’s HS friends went to Skidmore to major in Dance and loved it. I know a very happy Theatre/Music major who just graduated from Conn College but no dancers.

Connecticut College, Sarah Lawrence, Goucher and Muhlenberg, as well as some of the other schools mentioned above, would seem to be good places to look. To those, I’d add Kenyon and Barnard.
