Hi, all
I’ve been looking at liberal arts colleges. What are some liberal arts colleges with good biology/ biochemistry programs? Or some that I should avoid? I’m also planning to go to graduate school for Biomedical sciences/ Pharmocology/ Biomedical toxicology/ or something that relates to medicine(but not as a Doctor).
Thank you for reading.
These schools colleges would represent a sampling of those with good programs:
Pomona
Amherst
Bowdoin
Claremont McKenna
Hamilton
Wellesley
Reed
Middlebury
Oberlin
Barnard
Davidson
Bryn Mawr
Bucknell
Union
Lawrence
Wooster
Skidmore
Wheaton (MA)
Gustavus Adolphus

My D searched out LACs with strong science programs and her favorites were Lafayette (where she attended), Union , Bucknell, and Franklin and Marshall.
We looked at Muhlenberg but my D nixed that school – it has a good reputation in the sciences but just didn’t excite her for some reason. Also my D eliminated Skidmore which is on the list above as she felt the college was skewed more towards the humanities/arts than the sciences even though I think they were putting up a new science building (again, it is a fine college that just didn’t happen to strike her the right way).
All of what I wrote is just one person’s opinion so it is very important to visit/research for yourself.
While technically not an LAC, RPI has a strong biochem program: http://rpi.edu/dept/bcbp/index.html .
They also have an accelerated physician-scientist program to get your MD in medical research: https://science.rpi.edu/physician-scientist-program.
What are your admission stats and what type of location are you looking for? It’s hard to recommend schools without that basic information. For example, Amherst and Williams are great schools, but they are only realistic possibilities for a small percentage of applicants with very high stats and they both are rural. For some people, they are great choices but for others they are completely unrealistic or are not desirable.
Vassar has great sciences and facilities.
Bates, Colby and Tufts strong in the sciences including Biology, Chemistry and Biochem.
I’d add Mt. Holyoke.
