Liberal Arts colleges in cities

bclinton: How is Worcester? CC peeps consensus is that it is really depressed…is that true?

Worcester is a former manufacturing city and is littered with old warehouses, factory buildings, diners, and three deckers from its industrial past. It also has a dozen colleges and is on the MBTA line to Boston with 12 trains/day. Definitely a working class feel to it but it has some interesting things to do and you are an hour’s driving distance to Boston and Cape Cod. Beyond the colleges, there is a growing biomedical industry there near UMass Medical School also located in Worcester.

^^ I’m not in the best position to comment on what Worcester is like these days, as I haven’t spent any time there in years. I did pass through about a year ago, though, and I was impressed with what had been built in the years since I had last been there. And I’ve heard from friends who live in Massachusetts that Worcester was beginning to emerge from a decades-long slump as as affordable alternative to the Boston metro area, with a growing high tech sector. But best to ask people who really know something.

As a MA resident, I just want to say that Worcester isn’t anything special. There isn’t really any character or vibe or anything interesting about it. It used to be a pretty disgusting city but it’s getting better.
