liberal arts colleges with best pre-med?

which liberal arts colleges have well known pre-med programs??

Some schools make strong claims about the quality of their pre-med advising and placements, but I’ve never seen clear evidence that certain LACs are better than others for pre-med, per se (no ranking or reviews, with clearly explained, measurable criteria, addressing specific program strengths.) They all have pre-med tracks; most will have some sort of advisory system. The LACs with the highest med school placement rates would tend to be the colleges that are most selective. So … choose the school based on overall quality and fit (and keep in mind that many students decide not to continue with pre-med programs).

That said, you may want to check out:

Haverford (which for years had a physician aboard its pre-med advisory team; http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/haverford-college/146705-pre-med-haverford.html</a> - note, this link is from 2006)
Davidson (which has claimed especially high med-school placement rates; http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/davidson-college/676653-pre-med-advisor-davidson.html</a>)
Colorado College (which runs a human cadaver dissection lab and course taught by surgeons; [Colorado College | Bulletin](http://www.coloradocollege.edu/bulletin/march2005/healing.asp))

These are just 3 suggestions. Many other LACs can provide good pre-med preparation.

They all can. This is one of the great “myths” out there, that some schools have better pre-med than others. What is pre-med, after all?

4 semesters of chemistry, with labs
2 semesters of genetic/cell biology, with labs
2 semesters of Physics
2 semesters of Calculus
Expository writing

That’s it. Philosophy and music majors get into med school with no more than those basic courses. All top 100 schools can offer perfectly good courses in those areas. All these schools offer MCAT prep courses, or access to them.

Focus on what school you like best, will be academically challenging to you based on challenging peers, and has the environment that suits you.

Holy Cross has a very good pre-med program with a new science building. HC is one of the very few LAC’s that has produced Nobel Prize winner in medicine.

Depending upon which part of the country you are willing to look in, there are a number that come to my mind. In the south ( in addition to Davidson -which is at the top of the list, is Rhodes, Furman, Sewanee and Washington and Lee. Each of these schools has very strong pre-med programs with a majority of it’s premed grads getting into first or second choice of medical schools. At many excellent LAC’s , grade deflation can be an issue, when it comes to medical school admissions. However, the better LAC’s reputations for tough academics is usually well known and students with B averages amd decent MCAT’s will usually prevail over a student with a 3.75-4.0 in a less demanding college. Try sending Curmudgeon a PM-his amazing daughter just graduated from Rhodes this past spring and has just begun medical school at Yale-she was a Goldwater Scholar-did amazing molecular research with St. Judes/Rhodes as an undergrad. Curm. knows a wealth about a number of LAC"S.
