Right now, I'm making my list of the colleges that I'm going to apply to, and I was wondering if any of you have any insight into which liberal arts schools have amazing English departments. I know I want to major in English, so having a great English department is a must for me.

I know that all liberal arts schools will have at least a decent English department, but what I'm looking for is something like Amherst has, which is a writing center where students can drop in anytime and get help from professors on essays or reports. This may be unique to Amherst, but I'm looking for something like this in the schools that I'm applying to.

Thanks!

coolbeans19, Most LACs have good English departments and writing centers are quite common at least at the LACs I’m familar with.

If like the academic ambience of Amherst – small classes, commited accessible faculty, bright high achieving student body – then you should look at other schools in the same range like Swarthmore, Williams, Pomona, Wesleyan, Davidson, Middlebury, Bowdoin. Wellesley if you are female. There are others but that’s a start. See which appeal to you then go from there.

These are all extrememly selective schools, so you also need to identify a balanced list of less selectives and sure bets. .

In addition to focusing on the English department you should think about what other characteristics you’d like. This is the best way to develop a reach/match/safety list.
