Hi everyone, I just wanted to know what would be a better chioce, a Liberal Arts College, like Furman, or a University. I want to go to medical school in the US and my guidance knows absolutley nothing about US schools or liberal arts vs universities. I really like Furman, but would med school be easier to get into if I came from a bigger, more well known university?

depends how good the liberal arts school is. the top 10 liberal arts schools by ranking all have incredible acceptance rates into med school

I’ve been trying to find some concrete statistics (re: liberal arts colleges’ acceptance rates into med school) but ended up with nothing. Where, may I ask, did you find “incredible acceptance rates?”
I’m trying to prove something to a family member, haha.

Thanks for the answers Liberal Arts colleges are way more attractive to me than universities because of their smaller size, what are the top ten? Where do you find this?

US News ranks LACs in a similar fashion as universities, but like all rankings there is going to be some disagreement over their validity.

The statistics is for overall graduate school (med, business, etc.) acceptance rate, though.

Hi there,

Not to be a downer, but just a word of warning from someone whose gone rough the experience. The liberal arts colleges in the us are indeed quite small, and they only take about 50 internationals a year. I heard that Williams in fact only took two canadiens in their class of 2010. but they are nonetheless amazing schools, so best of luck wherever you decide to apply!

P.s. I know you want to go to med school in the us, but did you consider the uk? My friend’s going to birminghams accelerated med program next year, and its only 25k a year for six years…pretty cost effective for becoming a doctor, especially for an international. Not to mention that it’s a great school and englands a nice place:P

Gone through the experience…damn autocorrect

Yes England is a nice place, but you better really love it because that degree will mean you can be a doctor there, but not back to Canada or US.

Honestly, and I say this as a lover of the liberal arts, the small liberal arts college is a massive money trap in America. I mean if you find a school you love go for it, but financially I think you will save boatloads of money simply by going to a state school. Medicals schools really only care about your MCAT scores and your GPA so your chances won’t be effected either way. You will likely save around 90k by going to state school though and that will be a lifesaver when you pony up for med school.
