Liberal Arts Fellows Program

Anyone know anything about this. I'm on lunch break now so I'm gonna look it up more but it seems pretty interesting, seems we get to graduate with honors, get extra money for research projects, study abroad, etc, and get priority in internship/assistantship positions. They apparently guarantee 1500-2500 for extra expenses for study abroad/research projects/etc. This seems pretty awesome, but I think it's a fairly new program (could have just started this year as info seems to be scarce and I'm supposed to be getting more info in the mail soon). Anyone know anything more?

This is a new program that will be run by the College of Liberal Arts in association with the Schreyer Honors College. I will allow LA to disseminate the detailed information. Here is the general description:

"The Liberal Arts Undergraduate Fellows program, offered in partnership with the Schreyer Honors College, challenges students to the kind of high achievement appropriate to the quality and aspirations of our students and faculty, alumni and friends. Beginning in the fall semester, 2008, all incoming Liberal Arts students (including those already accepted into the Schreyer Honors College and those who begin their studies in the summer of 2008) are invited to perform their way into an enhanced, ambitious, and enriched educational experience that carries specific responsibilities and offers specific benefits. Fellows will undertake serious academic studies, interact with alumni, develop particular abilities, gain invaluable exposure to worlds beyond Penn State, and build a portfolio of experiences that will influence employers, professional schools, and graduate schools."

The key is that this is a program students would enter after arriving at Penn State and, if they have not already been admitted to the Schreyer Honors College, they will be concurrently enrolled in the Fellows Program and the SHC upon successful application and admission.

So if accepted I basically join the SHC in addition to this new program or is it basically the same? Also, I still get to choose if i wish to dorm in the regular dorms (I want to dorm in east) over the SHC dorms right?

Hyakku - If you are admitted to the SHC (and are a LA student) then you may eventually apply for the Fellows program as well. The Fellows program will have requirements in addition to the SHC basic requirements, so consider the SHC to be a "baseline" with the Fellows program an incentive for further achievement in what it means to be a student of liberal arts.

If one is NOT admitted initially to the SHC you can begin working towards both under the guidance of LA advisors (taking ENGL 30 and 2 other H courses in your freshman year) and then apply at the same time and with the same application for admission to the Fellows Program AND the SHC.

And you are not required to live in any specific dorm. I do, however, encourage all of our students to choose either Atherton or Simmons. Very, very few of our students regret choosing honors housing (if nothing else, they have some of the largest freshmen rooms and are immediate to the main part of campus).

I hope that helps.

I'm hearing that alot about the dorms, but I also want to get that "complete" experience, being surrounded by freshmen (especially the PSU family) was a big incentive for me leaning towards penn state, but the lure of big dorms is also very attractive.

Atherton and Simmons each house about 600 students, mostly first-years, but a lot of upperclassmen as well. Everyone needs to find their own fit, that is certain.

hyakku,
Any dorm you choose will be fine, however East is not near anything except the stadium and has tiny rooms. I do think you would miss out on a lot of what makes the Honors' College special by not living in the Honors' dorms. The students there become a family freshman year, living and working together and pushing each other to succeed. Atherton and Simmons are right on College Ave near all of the shops, restaraunts, frats and parties. There is always something going on on College Ave. My son who is now in his second year, had some reservations also about living in Honors' housing as he thought the population would be too tame for his liking. He has found a group of students who are like-minded, serious students, all very involved in campus activities, but also like to party on the weekends. If you are accepted into Schreyer's, think over your decision carefully.
