liberal arts???help!!

hello everyone,

i was considering the options of liberal arts college. But there were a few questions i was confused about:
1)will i be able to do a PhD (in medicine) once i join a liberal arts college?
2)again, will be able to pursue genetic engineering once i join liberal arts college?

please, help me!!

yes, a liberal arts college will prepare you for applying to graduate programs.

To expand slightly on BeanTown’s reply, liberal arts colleges primarily provide undergraduate education that prepares the student for a broad range of disciplines to pursue in graduate school. Many people graduate from liberal arts colleges and then go on to medical school (or other types of graduate school).

thank you BeanTownGirl and Pootie for your replies but i still have some questions like,

do all liberal arts colleges offer subjects that will allow me to take medical studies or genetics as majors? btw, what r the courses that i would have to take to take up medical studies or genetics as my major?

Getting admitted to med school does not require a specific major. You can major in English, Art History, or Psychology if you like, as long as you also take the required pre-med courses (organic chemistry etc.)

Now, if you want to pursue a PhD in genetics, that’s a little different. In that case, you may be advised to major in biology, biochemistry, or a related field (and try to develop a fairly specific research interest).

There are very few schools where you can specialize in genetics at the undergrad level and they are usually larger research-oriented universities rather than LACSs.
At an LAC you would major in bio, or biochem as previously mentioned.

won’t doing major in biology or biochemistry at undergrad level in a LAC enable me to choose genetics as a major when i transfer for my grad studies in a research based university??

being an international student, are there any other criteria i would have to fulfill or just doing major in biology at a LAC then transferring for medical studies would get me my PhD??

one final question, is LAC a good choice if i want to be a doctor or a genetic engineer?

To become a medical doctor, you need to go to medical school and get an MD.
As I indicated above, you can major in virtually any subject prior to med school as long as you take the required pre-med courses. Here is one college’s description of pre-med requirements:
[Swarthmore College :: Health Sciences Office :: Frequently Asked Questions for Premedical Students](Frequently Asked Questions for Premedical Students :: Health Sciences Office :: Swarthmore College)

If you want to become a genetic engineer, not a medical doctor, then you would go to graduate school and get a PhD. In that case, you probably would take some of the same undergraduate courses you would take for the pre-med sequence (in biology, chemistry, physics and math). However, you’d have less flexibility in choosing a major. You’d probably want to major in biology or biochemistry. In addition, you should try to develop a serious research interest, then look for a PhD program whose professors are working in that area.

It is possible to get both an MD and a PhD, but they are two separate degrees. The MD prepares you to be a medical doctor; the PhD prepares you to be a researcher.
