I am currently still in high school but I have been encouraged to start looking
at colleges now. I am very much interested in musical theatre and I would like to major in it. However, academics are also very important to me so I have decided that I will not attend a conservatory program. My question is: what are some liberal arts schools with notable musical theatre programs?
I have already found:
Northwestern
Elon
Oklahoma City University
Syracuse
Ithaca
Rockford College
Roosevelt University
Penn State
Central Michigan University
Are there anymore?????

Other schools that also have musical theatre are Rutgers, Elmhurst, Arizona and Marietta.

I reccommend going to the musical theatre major forum, if you haven't already. It's terribly helpful!

You sound a lot like me in what I want. :) I want great MT training...but I don't want to have to sacrifice my education!

A few schools in addition to those on your list that I've been looking at include...

Otterbein (my favorite!)
University of Michigan (they even allow a double major)
James Madison University
Emerson College
University of Hartford - the Hartt School
Muhlenberg

Again, those are just a few. Do a search in the MT forum; I'm certain you'll come up with more information than you'll know what to do with!

Thanks guys you have helped a lot!

the MT/theatre college search is kind of frustrating in that you have to look at the specifics of every single program-- some BFA conservatories actually turn out to have an option to double major or minor, giving you more academic options, and on the flip side you may find with some BA's that much of your courseload will be a more "academic," less practical approach to theatre.
one particular caution about your list: schools like Syracuse & Ithaca are conservatory programs within a univ-- it may look as if you have access to all the lib. arts classes you want, but MT is honestly like a double major-- you may not have time to do much else. i know also somewhere like Roosevelt is pretty specialized so may not offer the range of majors that a bigger school does. check out the specifics of requirements and so forth.

DEFINITELY head over to the MT forum and start searching through past threads. you will become so much more educated about what's out there and then clearer about what you want.
and feel free to PM me- i have a year's worth of knowledge/research and would be happy to help.
