My daughter (senior in hs) is looking for a good liberal arts school with a well respected art department--doesn't want to go to "art school", but that's where her interest lies. Any suggestions?

The women’s colleges (and former women’s colleges) tend to have strong art depts.

Take a look at Brown and RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) in Providence-they are adjacent to each other and you can cross en-roll and get a degree from each institution.

Echoing nyc, but the women’s colleges, especially Smith, would be great. Smith’s art department is superb in and of itself, but it also has a fantastic art museum on campus.

Rhodes has some interesting things going on in art. One of my favorite artists is a professor there, [Ben Butler](http://www.benbutlerart.com/).

There are lots of them, but without knowing GPA/Boards; preferred region; rural/suburban preference, etc, impossible to advise

Brown and RISD are great schools, but Brown is a uni (OP asked for LACs) and RISD is an art school (OP said not art school).

Re Smith: great art dept, about the best art museum you’ll find at a LAC and a top-notch academics overall (in case OP’s D decides she wants to major in government, engineering or neurosci).

Helpme, I’d recommend, in varying levels of selectivity, Williams, Wesleyan, Hamilton, Kenyon, Oberlin, Skidmore, Conn College. Smith for females. All LAC art departments tend to feature more traditional media like painting, drawing, sculpture, photography. For new media and design you’ll have more options at an art school.

LACs won’t require a portfolio for admissions but it’s still a good idea to submit one. See the colleges’ website under supplementary materials for instructions. In addition to the slide or CD portfolio your daughter might want to put together a fine arts package including a resume listing classes, accomplishments; an additional recommendation from an instructor or mentor.

My son was an art studio / art history major at Williams. Williams has a renowned art history department and three world class museums on or near campus. The studio art department is smaller but well funded with beautiful facilities and professors who are practicing artists.

Bard and Skidmore.

SUNY New Paltz
