I am a freshman at a small liberal arts school who has realized first semester that they are the wrong type of person for such a school and are looking to transfer. My question is this:
If I choose to take a leave of absence second semester and reapply to colleges for Fall 2017, is there any way I can be admitted as a freshman to a new university?
I am currently pursuing all options, including sophomore transfer, junior transfer, 3-2 programs, etc to change things but would like to understand all my options.
Thanks for your time
For some colleges if you have fewer than some set number of credit hours you might still apply as a freshman (Penn State is one example of a school with a credit hour minimum for that). You will need to check each school’s web site or call them to find out. Most will consider you a transfer.
@Shankara – I’m in the exact same boat! I know everyone says you’re supposed to give it time, but I feel pretty confident that my LAC is not what I want right now. I definitely didn’t realize what I was getting myself into (I thought I wanted a specific type of classes, etc., but now that I’m here I realize that my learning style just doesn’t mesh well with where I ended up). If you don’t mind me asking, what do you think your GPA will look like? I’m worried that my grades right now will be too low to transfer somewhere equal in status to my current school for the second semester of this year. Also, do you think you’ll be able to get good recs from your professors? I know I certainly wont. I’m thinking that my best option right now is to just withdraw from classes this semester and take classes at a community college, and then reapply to schools for the fall of 2017.
@tecz77 - I’m confident my GPA will be pretty good. It’s hard to give an exact estimate because I have midterms still to take but the one I have taken so far I did decently. I do think I can get a letter of rec from a couple of professors here. There is a kid here who has done exactly what I described, transferring here from Cal Poly Slo and coming in as a freshman, so know that it is possible with some universities. Whatever you end up doing, best of luck
