liberals unite!

I was watching the news. "President Bush has said that he has not ruled out using force against Iran.......". Wow, he's considering going into another friggin war. Unbelievable.

Dont worry. He'll wuss out ;)

i'm a liberal but I have decided that in this day and age... bush-bashing is way too tiring and pointless. So I try to my mouth and time towards causes that push us towards a better future

This thread is somewhat dead, but I was wondering, how do you guys feel about Bush wanting schools to teach intelligent design. Also, am I the only one who hates the No Child Left Behind?

I hate it too. I recently read a book written by teachers called something like Everybody Left Behind and it talked about how it calls for a 100% pass rate on all tests by 2010 or something like that. Also, it calls for a 100% pass rate among subgroups ie English Language Learners by a certain date. The problem, though, is that as soon as the English Language Learners learn enough english they get moved OUT of the subgroup and into the "regular" group. So basically all you ever have are the people struggling to learn Spanish in that subgroup. And if that subgroup fails...which of course it does because the people that DO know English are moved out of it...the whole school is designated as "Not meeting expectations."

And, of coure, standardized tests are bogus.

I wouldn't hate NCLB if it weren't for the fact that it's a new plan being implemented without new funding. I admire the idea of improving the school system, but the program is misguided, ineffective, and mismanaged.

And intelligent design being taught in schools is not entirely a bad thing. I mean, I don't believe in it, and it definitely shouldn't be the sole creation theory taught. But the fact remains that evolution is, although widely accepted, still a theory. I think evolution should be the main theory taught in schools, but intelligent design should at least be mentioned as an alternate idea, if only to pacify the fundies.

Intelligent design should not be taught in our science classes in the US. We are far enough behind other nations as is, without introducing this into our curriculum. This theory also acknowledges there is a prime mover, or in other words, a GOD. This is not a bad thing, but religion should not be in public school curriculum, it may alienate atheists, agnostics and some with non christian beliefs. I don;t like NCLB because I think if necessarry children should be held back until they are ready to be promoted to the next grade level.

Sometimes I think that classes should be grouped by ability levels instead of by age. But then of course you'd get pushy parents trying to get their kids bumped up to the next level.

well, I just got an idea from my Marxism thread.....do you guys support the legalization of marijuana?? and what are you reasons for being for or against?

If it weren't for No Child Left Behind, I'd be able to be in Pre-Calculus, and 10th grade classes, cause we'd still have an acceleration program at the junior high, instead of an enirched one. Yea so I think it's a bad thing. Has anyone seen than one article called "No Football Player Left Behind"? It's really funny.

^Those will link to 2 versions of the "No Football Player Left Behind" if anyone is intersted.

so, does anyone have anything to say about legalizing the use of marijuana?....

it should be legal...

On one hand, if legalized, it would relieve some of the pressure on the legal system. However, it could open a whole other can of worms, so to speak. Once something is legalized, it's extremely difficult to ban it again (ie. alcohol Prohibition)

I'm not really sure where I stand; I can see and understand the reasons for both.

I agree, I don;t think it is much worse than cigarettes, and cigarettes are more addicting. Also, alcohol impairs judgment also, but it is not outlawed. Also, it is used to treat cancer patients, and it calms and soothes people. Don't get me wrong, I would never moke pot, but I dont get what the big deal is about it, that it should be illegal. I;ve never heard of anyone dying directly becuz of marijuana. Anyone else have anything to chip in...?

due to its illegal status, marijuana users can be drawn into an underworld culture that can lead to addiction to far more dangerous drugs. thus, legalizing marijuana would take it out of the hands of drug dealers and would destroy its status as a "gateway drug".

I saw on Tv yesterday that they are trying to make marijuana into an FDA approved drug to treat rare diseases. It was on CSPAN or something. Honestly, I think legalizing marijuana would make things easier and better

The #1 reason people smoke pot (everyone I know at least) is because it is "cool" and counterculture/rebellious. Legalizing it, therefore, would probably decrease use because it would lose that image. It would also resolve the medical marijuana debate and make the pot trade less shady/dangerous.

So far everyone agrees that marijuana should be legalized.....anyone disagree?

I think it should be legalised, but heavily restricted. As in a strong age restriction (21 at least) for purchase, and only certain outlets allowed to sell it.
