D is looking at her booklist and for the most part the UDel bookstore is either close to Lieberman's prices or, in one case, lower. However, one book is $60 less at Lieberman's! The edition requested by the Prof is listed as F11 by the bookstore, and 5th by Lieberman's. Anyone have any experience with Lieberman's? Also the bookstore lists the book as 'custom', Lieberman's does not...though it doeshave custom noted on one of her other books....

We got books from Liebermans for the first semester. After that we ordered through Amazon and saves a lot of money.

My D purchased some of her books from Lieberman’s during her first two years and never had a problem if she had to return/exchange any of them. The last two years she purchased all her textbooks on line and saved over 30% compared to UD’s Bookstore/Lieberman’s prices. Amazon is now providing textbooks with delivery in 2 days with no shipping charges (this is a great deal-I don’t know how long it will be available). My D was a Nursing Major and saved nearly $200.00 per semester purchasing her books on-line. If you did this over 4 years it would easily pay for good student computer. Good luck.

mwallenmd- Were any of your D’s books ever marked as ‘custom’? Two of D’s books are marked this way and Lieberman’s notes:

“Custom textbooks are made specifically for the university, often particular to a professor and their course section. Custom books may contain/omit certain material that the professor may have requested.”

The book that is $60 less at Liebermans is marked custom by the UDel Bookstore, but not Liebermans…

I think we’re going to call Liebermans and buy the rest at Amazon…

Amazon all the way if you can. I got a textbook for $4.59 new that would cost $120.00 through the bookstore and slightly less through lieberman’s. Amazon is almost always the cheapest way, but Lieberman’s is also great if you want to be able to pick up your books on campus. Alibris.com also has some good prices on textbooks.

The bookstore is basically a huge ripoff in my personal opinion lol.

So-Called “Custom” books are also a way for the university to make a bit of a profit. The books are generally a slim version of an already well-known published text. The only thing typically custom about the book is a unique, university-designed cover and some chapters are removed because the department doesn’t teach certain material. Each class is different, however, so make sure you do your research before purchasing from a non university associated store/site.

We used UD bookstore first year and Leiberman’s the second year. Had no issues with either, but Lieberman’s was slightly cheaper. Sounds like now Amazon is the way to go though.

My son at Michigan has been renting his text books for a few semester and it has worked nicely. So we just rented most of my D’s textbooks too, through Liebermans. Of course, I don’t know how it will work out, but (maybe because the renting concept is new) so far the books have all been pristine and were able to be returned postage free at the end of the semester easily. If your student doesn’t plan to keep the books (and chances are they won’t) it seems like a great and cost effective alternative.

I don’t know if Amazon rents many textbooks; it seems to have a limited textbook for Kindle program but we haven’t used it.

I have been buying my kids’ books online for a while now. This year I got most of them of Alibris (which is another seller marketpace), one on ebay and one on Amazon. Amusingly, I got one book from Delaware Book Exchange through Alibris and the price I paid was less than what they had it posted for on their own website.

Last year I bought a couple of International Editions for my son. They worked fine for him (the page #s in one of them was a bit off from the US edition but I knew that in advance), he did well in both classes. I ended up reselling them on half.com for more than I paid!

For all freshman, if you still have the 40% off coupon that Lieberman’s gave out during orientation, they will still honor it even though it expired yesterday. My D went in to pick up 2 books we ordered through them and bought a sweatshirt while she was there.
