Life after geneseo

i'm just worried about how no one's ever heard of this place...
how is it going to grad school/lookin for a job?

1). Grad schools don’t place much significance on WHERE you received your undergrad. Geneseo has graduated students to Harvard and other prestigious universities.

2).Jobs might. Not too sure about this but I am from upstate NY (about 1.5 hrs from Geneseo) and everyone I have talked to knows about Geneseo being the “gem” of the SUNYs.

Either case, both only influence your plans a teeny tiny bit.

Jobs? Within NY 2 types of employers – highly prestiguous who are looking for ivies etc, and others. Between the two – I suspect most employers treat all SUNYs the same. They will either hire from a SUNY or not. Some schools may have more on campus recruiting, but if an employer will hire from a SUNY, my guess is if you are willing to travel to interview with them, they will see you too, if your grades/major are what they are looking for.

Companies and grad schools that are recruiting from top schools know of Geneseo. Remember, Geneseo grads are everywhere now and many of my friends who graduated Geneseo are at the top of their profession 10 years out. When I am looking thru resumes a Geneseo grad definitely catches my attention because I know of the rigour of the programs at Geneseo.

I had the same concerns 10 years ago but the recognition is much better these days.

My firm in NYC has people from a variety of schools – private ivies, top schools, IS public, OOS public. I think iti is only natural to favor your own school, but other than Geneseo grad I dont think people distinguish much among SUNYs. IMO.

I still thing Geneseo is a great school.

I guess that depends on the profession. Where I am it is well known that there is a difference between any SUNY school or one of the more competitive schools like Geneseo or Binghamton. Regardless, depending on the career it is the graduate program that receives the most attention. I work in healthcare (Long Island) and I continue to see more physicians over the years who attended Geneseo undergrad.

I know people from Geneseo usually have no problem getting a job in NYC.

Friends of mine who are AVPs in school districts also tell me that Geneseo grads do recieve extra attention when it comes to the review process for filling teaching positions. My friends are not all former Geneseo grads but responsible for the review process.

What about being business major at Geneseo? How are the job opportunties after graduation? Participating in interships not only in rochester but in new york city perhaps? Do big business firms: PWC, Goldmansachs etc look more into Geneseo business grads? To be more specific i’m plannning to be an accountant, preferably working in NYC. I also heard that many firms in NYC don’t even bother traveling all the way upstate to offer internships as it is easier just to stay in the city and offer NYU and Baruch more choices. I’ve been quite worried when it came to this : Business job opportunities.

I was a business/communication major but realized my last year at Geneseo I wanted to go into healthcare administration. I would tend to agree that these big firms may not be traveling up to Geneseo to recruit for a “recruitment day” on campus however, that does not mean that there are not Geneseo “connections” at many of these firms. I went to NYU for graduate school. You would expect that at a school like NYU the placement opportunities were tremendous. I ended up researching my own internship and residency placement and landed a great one at a hospital on Long Island. The Geneseo and NYU connection helped my placement. One administrator was a graduate of Geneseo and was very familiar with the Business program there, the President of the Hospital was a NYU grad again, very familiar with the program etc. The people who know schools know of Geneseo and the quality of the programs and the ability of the students. I was always a true believer in taking charge of my education and eduational experience. So maybe you would need to reach out to the placement office at Goldmansachs etc. but I am sure if you speak with someone in the Business program at Geneseo there are connections at these firms. Our grads are everywhere at this point. What is important I think is the rigour of the program. You will be challenged, you will work hard, you will learn and have an edge over those who graduate from less challenging programs. You will be better prepared for graduate school if you choose to attend. With over 40% of grads attending graduate school you might be one of them.

From Geneseo Weekly Newsletter - again opportunities to make connections. I am going to get more involved in activities like this myself (Personally, I am an Assistant Vice President at a Hospital Network in NY).

Alumni return to campus to share insight

A state Supreme Court judge, company presidents, a lawyer and other successful alumni returned to campus for special events last week to share their insight with students. The events highlight the College’s ongoing efforts to provide opportunities for alumni to engage with students and stay involved with Geneseo.

On March 4, the Geneseo Opportunities for Leadership Development program hosted a full afternoon of discussion and workshops about personal and business success, diversity and other topics followed by a mixer and dinner with guests, faculty, alumni and students. The dinner featured guest speaker Laurie Weckerle Baker '85, senior vice president and chief operating officer for The Summit Federal Credit Union.

New York State Supreme Court Justice Yvonne Lewis '67 led a workshop on “Women and Diversity,” Mary Jane Armitage Stell '85, president of Stell Environmental Enterprises, Inc. spoke about “Breaking the Glass Ceiling,” and Bonnie Swanson, branch manager for Key Bank of Geneseo, led discussion about “Financing Your Life.” There was also an open forum on “being a superwoman.” Students also explored how to be career oriented and have a fulfilled married life in the “Power Couples” session with the husband-and-wife team of Tracie Lopardi Brown '95, an attorney for Harris Beach LLC and Chris Brown '94, editor of Bills Media Digest.

About 20 alumni attended the mixer, and 50 students and 50 guests attended the dinner, said Tom Matthews, director of the Leadership, Education, Development & Training.

“I think this program will be an annual event,” he said. “It was a huge success.”

The event was a collaboration between GOLD, the Women’s Leadership Institute and The Pamela York Klainer Center for Women and Business.

A day later, the Xi Xi Chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha honor society at Geneseo invited five alumni to share information about their education, experiences and careers after graduation at Career Night.

Alumni presenters for Career Night were:

Constance Christakos '83 — senior legislative analyst for Congressional Relations, United States Office of Personnel Management
Matt Hurlbutt '91 — managing director of business development, Greater Rochester Enterprise
James Milroy '81 — director of budget and financial analysis, SUNY Geneseo
Michael O’Sullivan '91 — director of government relations, Boys and Girls Club of America
Jennifer Scrafford '97 — supervisory program specialist, Congressional Research Service, Library of Congress

thanks geneseograd!

dbear you’re welcome. You are asking very important questions. Good luck to you!

Geneseograd-Thanks alot for the informative response, i really do apprecaite it. Like you said, business firms wouldn’t come all the way upstate to offer job opportunities which i’m just a bit worried about moreover, i guess having good proper connections is key. I’m deciding betweeen bing and geneseo and as of now geneseo is slightly more on my side. If you have any other business related informations that has to be shared, feel free to post more; i am always active on this forum particulary this thread. Once again, thanks everything, its very good to have a formal geneseo graduate to share some experiences and facts.

blazinreaper: Definitely call the business school regarding your concerns with having the “big firms” comming up to Geneseo. They should be able to help address your concerns. As an alumni I do think it is important to share my experience which was all positive. It really is a great place.
