Shouldn’t this go into - now, bear with me here - the Law School forum?
This is really bad advice, and surprising to see on cc.
Is this a paid promotion by law school adcoms?
Agree, the market IS saturated with lawyers.
I’m not sure why there isn’t mitigating information about this. This article does not reflect the reality of a law career today.
- Many of the lower-tier law schools were used as cash cows by the larger school, basically preying on lower-tier law students to cough up tuition through crippling debt. If you get into one of these schools, you graduate with debt, low ability to pass the bar, and no law-related job. https://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/19/business/dealbook/an-expensive-law-degree-and-no-place-to-use-it.html
- The article should say that to do well in law, you will need to land a top 10 or at most 15 law school. Lower level schools, unless you are in the tippy top of the class, will not win you a job in law once you graduate. To get into a top law school you need high GPA and an LSAT of 172 or better, about.
- It's impossible to go into a nonprofit organization after law school unless you are guaranteed debt forgiveness. The pay is too low. You will be saddled with debt forever.
Sidenote . . . just read “Rooster Lawyer” by John Grisham. Interesting take on the law school industry.
Agreed the market is over-saturated. The best bet these days is to have a STEM undergrad - there are lots of opportunities in patent or corporate law looking for lawyers who understand STEM fields. That’s a small set of law students though…
