Life after the academy?

I recently got my appoinment to attend the air force academy, however i am wondering what life is like after graduation. I know you’re required to serve for 5 years, however, how many people actually get the job they wanted? Are some stuck with menial jobs for five years? Also, for those who are/want to be developmental engineers, i know most goverment contracting is signed off to civilian corporation(ie boeing, Grumman) so what exactly would a developmental engineer do?

Well, what do you consider “boring?”
Generally, about 1/2 of academy grads get flying jobs (pilot, CSO, ABM, etc). The other half of grads go into quite a diverse set of fields. Some to into contracting, finance, CE, intel, security forces, special investigations, combat rescue, special tactics, behavioral scientist, developmental engineering, etc. Of course, some are more competitive than others.

how about combat? do any graduates see actual combat?
