Life at Chico

okay so i got accepted to chico state, and i am really thinking about going there. is there anyone out there w/ some info about chico? good things? bad things? i would love to know.

rumor has it that 1% of the nations alcohol is at chico state....but i doubt that. Following that theme though i would bring an extra liver, just in case.

I live in chico, and have lived here for close to 9 years now. I will be leaving it for college next year, but I know I'll miss it.

I'm sure you've heard chico is a party school...and it is. Even as a high school student, I know a lot about the party scene. Personally, I like it. In fact, I love it. Most the students live downtown, near the university. At night there is always something to do, and it's always in walking distance. It does get a little out of hand sometimes though. Last week there was a death in a fraternity hazing. But I have never personally experienced anything too bad...if you want to avoid the craziness, you can.

Chico also has Bidwell Park. It was once the second, now I think it's the third, largest city park in the US (central park being first). If you like to be outside, you'll love it. Chico has notoriously hot summers, and there is nothing better than swimming in the creek in upper park. Also there is an awesome downtown, with local shops and resturants, and that is pretty majorly student territory, since the campus goes through downtown. But chico is a pretty big town too, a little over 100,000 people, before counting students.

Chico is a place a lot of students come back to to raise their children...I know my parents did. Once you live here, you love it. You should really try to visit to get a complete feel for it. If I didn't have the rebellious-need-to-leave-my-home-for-college streak in me, I'd probably go there too (and who knows, it's the only school I've got an acceptance letter from so far, haha).

there is no way 1% of the nations alcohol is at chico state, no possible way its even remotely close to that

was this the guy who died from being forced to drink like five gallons of water? that's pretty awful.

i read in the news that it wasnt even a frat, just some house that puts letters up

so if you change the headline to "college student dies" no one gives a ****, only when its hazing does anyone care

Yeah, he had to drink 5 gallons of water and do pushups in a cold basement along with a few other pledges.

And technically it wasn't a frat. They got in trouble a few years ago during rush week and were suspended. They've been working on being recognized by the university for a while, but it hasn't happened. I hear a lot about this particular incident because 1) my dad is the news director at our local tv stations and 2) my stats teacher's wife is the woman who decides if a fraternity or sorority is recognized by the university.

The students at Chico probably consume 1% of the alcohol that is swigged by all college students nationwide. If you consider the fact that Chico has like 20000 students, then it becomes very likely. (If i remember correctly, there are less than 10 million full time college students in the USA, which means that Chico students would have to drink 5 times more than the average student) Sure, schools like SDSU might be just as bad of a party school, but for the higher ones like Berkeley, little alcohol is consumed.

cali_girl, I got accepted and am going there too. Already 100% sure about that. I hear nothing but good things about there really, and since its close enough to come back to the Bay on long weekends/Breaks but far enough to gain some independence, it seems perfect. I really can't wait. Its also one of the few real "college towns" left pertaining to States in CA.

As for alcohol, the Safeway in Chico sells the most alcohol per capita than any other Safeway.

"The students at Chico probably consume 1% of the alcohol that is swigged by all college students nationwide."

i still refuse to believe that. you cant even begin to comprehend the amount of drinking that college students do. think about how many colleges there are, even in the princeton review top 357, i doubt chico does 1% of the total drinking in that book (hell, theyre not even in that book)

"but for the higher ones like Berkeley, little alcohol is consumed."

..you'd be surprised

My daughters going to Chico in the fall. Despite the 'party school' reputation I think it's going to be a great place for her to spend 4 years. Does anyone have any advice on choosing a dorm? From what we can tell they all look pretty much the same...old. LOL.

About the dorms...

Around here, Whitney Hall is called "****ney." But I think they are a little bit bigger than Mechoopda. Two of my friends are Pres. and Vice Pres. at Mechoopda, and even though the rooms are very small (as any dorm) they love it. I don't know anything about Shasta or Lassen.

If you want a little more privacy, and a lot more room, University Village is the place to be. They are apartments where there are 4 bedrooms and everyone gets a room to themself and there is a kitchen and a living room. It's a little far from the campus though...bike riding distance for sure, but a long walk. There's also lots of parking if you're planning to bring a car, although it doesn't guarentee a campus parking permit (10 hour parking meters are close to campus though). My best friend lives at UV and I know it was the best choice for her.

thanks for all the help!
