Hey there! Congratulations on your acceptance to Colby! I am a current senior here and an English and history double major. I hope I can help answer some of your questions!

First, many of the professors I’ve had here have been amazing, especially in the English department. We are so lucky because we have such small class sizes so you really have the opportunity to get to know some of your professors. On the whole they are very available and open to helping you outside of class or just discussing material that interests you further. The professors I’ve had here are passionate about their subjects. If you come here and are looking to take English classes you HAVE TO take at least one class with David Suchoff, Laurie Osborne, and Tilar Mazzeo.

I studied English literature and the program was awesome. The requirements expose you to a range of different topics but you also can generally fill you major with the literature that interests you. I LOVE my English major and not being able to take English classes anymore is one of the biggest reasons I’m sad to be graduating. Unfortunately I don’t know specifics about the econ program, but it’s one of our biggest majors and it has some of our most prestigious professors.

In terms of life at Colby, there is so much to do besides sports and outdoors. I am NOT an outdoorsy person. I have been skiing 0 times while I’ve been here, and I went hiking one time-- on my orientation trip. But I’m really never bored. Student government and student programming put on a whole range of events every weekend from concerts (Macklemore is coming in a couple weeks) to semi-formal dances, to big prize bingo, to speakers, to speed dating, dessert tastings, spontaneous fun days, surprise free gelato, comedians, coffee hours and much much more. Plus there are tons of clubs to fit anyone’s interests!

We have substance free housing on campus and beyond that it is very do-able to avoid drugs and alcohol. We have a program called OASIS which is chem-free living and they put on alcohol free events, movie-nights, and activities all the time. I personally didn’t drink until I was 21 and I found it easy to socialize without drinking. I was very happy to discover that people are extremely respectful of people’s decisions not to drink, and no one will try to force you or peer pressure you into it.

In terms of going into Waterville, it depends on the student. We have a jitney service which will drive you where ever you want to go in Waterville. There are some great restaurants that students frequent often including Pad Thai Too, a new Hibachi Grill, Mainely’s Brewhouse, Grand Central Brick Oven Pizza, and Buen Appetito. Jorgensen’s and Selah Tea are everyone’s favorite cafes located in the cute downtown area. There is a movie theater that we get discounted tickets at and a bowling alley not far from campus. The Colby-Waterville Alliance sets up events to get students downtown and often different places offer student discounts. I wouldn’t call it the most thrilling city in the world, but it’s definitely worth exploring.

The dorms on the whole are generally pretty nice. They are in the process of renovating some of the older doors on Bob’s row. I don’t have much to compare them to but as far as dorms that I’ve seen go, these ones are very livable. The best part is that class is never more than a 5 minute walk away!

I wish you the best of luck in your decision about where to attend college and I really hope you strongly consider Colby. Let me know if there’s any other questions you have!
