Life at Davidson: My Firsthand Experience

Hey everyone,
So I have been answering a lot of questions about Davidson, and I am inspired to tell you all my story. That is why I've decided to start a blog about my experience here, no fluff, no "you need this SAT score to get in". Truth is, this is 4 new years of your life, and you want to know what you're getting yourself into. I'm here to give you some answers.

Days at Davidson
Start reading, comment, ask me questions. :) Enjoy!

I have a couple questions:

1) Davidson is a rather small school. It would seem to me that after a while, the number of available “dating” candidates would dwindle, because you know everyone.

2) Are they good with merit aid?

3) Is it really true that you get to know your teachers, because you are in a small class, unlike a state university, where 300 kids might be in your Economics 101 class?

4) If you are not a Christian, and are more of a New York type, would Davidson be OK for that person. My kid is from Florida, but he has two northern parents, one of them jewish.

5) What other schools did you get into, besides Davidson, and why did you choose Davidson.

All great questions! When I am done with class for the day, I will answer them in the blog. Thanks :)

Also, when you all read the blog, please post comments so I know it’s being read and have some motivation to keep going. Thank you :)

Just posting to let you know that I answered your questions on the blog!

Thanks for reading my blog; I know there have been a lot of views. Make sure you comment if you read it! I will be updating tonight with some new inside scoop on PE requirements, Davidson tests, and counseling. Stay tuned :)

Can you describe a typical davidson student to me? are they preppy? non preppy? etc. Thanks!

No problem. I’ll update it when I can and answer your question. :)

great answer, thank you so much. I’m happy to find that people aren’t too preppy. I am looking more for a laid-back “cali” style as opposed to uptight and preppy. This prevented me from applying to A LOT of schools on the east coast, but Davidson seems fun. I love the work hard play hard schools so it seems like a solid match.

You’re welcome. If you have any more questions about anything just let me know!

i’m a direct descendant of william lee davidson, he’s my 8th generation grandfather on my dads side! Will this fact help me be admitted? or is the school all about numbers.

Also how is the diversity at campus? have you heard of any students who have lived overseas?

What is the party scene like at davidson?

Wow, that’s really cool! Definitely mention that in your Davidson essay. I will answer these questions in my next post in detail, but I can immediately assure you that Davidson admissions is not all about numbers.

Updated :)

Yay I will be waiting for your response!

New post is up!

I am a senior in high school and have narrowed my list of colleges. I have browsed on College Confidential until now, but am starting the application crunch time so I want to know more about these schools. These question threads seem like they should a good place to get information. I am interested in Davidson, Washington & Lee, Williams, Kenyon, Middlebury and a few others. I like the inside information you see on CC but I am skeptical about these threads with ‘current students’ offering to answer questions. The answers seem like they are scripted by Admissions people to put the best light on the school. I want to know the good and the bad before I make my final decision on these colleges.

My grades are very good, top 5% of my class. 6 AP’s (BC Calculus, Biology, Statistics, Spanish Language, U.S. History, World History, Physics B). 4’s and 5’s only so far. SAT1’s are 2240. SAT2’s are 780, Math 1 and 750 Biology. I am a cross country runner and I sing in our chorus, volunteer and other stuff. I think these schools are all at least possible for an acceptance and some for scholarships.

I want to work in college, but also want to have fun. I can’t tell from these posts that look scripted whether I am getting real insight. Do I have to look at other threads to find out what is really going on? The only one with spirited discussion seems to be on Kenyon’s forum and it talks about why people should not go there, and then other people defend the school. I like the honesty.

I can assure you that I am in no way affiliated with the admissions office, and that they would probably condone many of the things I say about partying. I do offer some criticism of the school in my latest blog post, Best and Worst Things about Davidson.

Honestly, when it comes down to it, you have to assess which environment is the best for you. No school will be perfect-even though I love Davidson, it’s not flawless. Going to F/Court parties can get repetitive. Davidson isn’t that diverse, and the ethnic groups we do have tend to segregate themselves. I feel like the immense amount of distribution requirements combined with the major requirements will strangle me. Etc. Yet, on the other hand, I’m working my butt off, learning a ton, and REMEMBERING it for more than just a test. My professors, especially my history one, care. The small size means you’ll see people you know all the time. It’s really easy to get involved without much competition. I’ve made some of the best friends I will ever have.

If you have any specific questions that you would like me to answer, please feel free to ask them. It is your decision as to whether or not you find them legitimate, but I can assure you that I was definitely not planted by the admissions office. I am doing this just because I was in the frantic college-search position last year, and I want prospective students to understand what they are getting themselves into when they apply to Davidson, which is something great.

Another update has been posted!

My daughter and I went on the admissions tour Friday Oct. 14 at 2 p.m and found the campus virtually deserted. The few students we saw where in the Union eating and some SAE’s playing corn hole behind their house on Patterson Court. I know it wasn’t Fall Break. Is there some explanation? I am an Alumna and although I was really happy to be back on campus, it seemed really dead.

I was on campus on Friday, Oct 14 at that time, and it seemed deserted to me too. My friend and I were in the library (bottom floor) getting some homework done before the weekend started. However, there weren’t a ton of people in the library. There’s a few things I can think of to explain your situation.
•People were getting ready for the SigEp formal. It started really early and people were meeting very, very early. My friends E and C started getting ready at about this time.
•People were in class.
•Since it was a Friday, a lot of people nap in their dorms before going out or do homework in their dorms.
•A lot of people go off campus for Friday afternoon or night. My friends and I were at Carowinds theme park (Scarowinds for Halloween) that night.

That’s all I can think of right now…but usually, Friday afternoon campus is dead because everyone is doing homework or sleeping or getting ready for sports practices. It gets much more exciting at night. In the morning, it would have been busy with people going to class.
