I am a parent of a Maryland student accepted at Furman for the fall. She is a little concerned about the school being so "southern" (with 75% of the students coming from the southeast) and whether she will feel out of place there. I would greatly appreciate any feedback from parents or students.

A good place to start is right here under the thread called "accepted." There are some fabulous write ups about Furman, it's students etc. I will be seeing Furman this week but I have no concerns really about the types of students, their acceptance of different kinds and I am international. I wouldn't say that about all universities, that is for sure.

Overall, Furman is not so much southern as it is predominantly "traditional" or "conservative." It has, however, students with every viewpoint and from just about everywhere in the country. My daughter is a sophomore there. Most of her closest friends are from the Houston, Chicago, Atlanta (a very metropolitan versus southern city), Washington DC, among other areas. Have your daughter or son visit for an overnight and see what he/she thinks....that's the best way to get a feel for the student body.

Thanks so much for your helpful responses!
