life at pitt

hey i got accepted to pitt a couple of weeks ago and i'm realllyyy thinking about going there for many reasons. but i don't know that much about the social aspect of pitt so i have a few questions for anyone that knows the answer or goes to the school now--

ignoring stats, does the school seem pretty diverse?

and what is the party life down there?

Yeah, I would say Pitt’s pretty diverse. There are sizable minority populations. You can find all sorts of people here.

Party life? Well, Pittsburgh is a city and there are plenty of clubs. I’m not into that kind of stuff so I can’t tell you much beyond that. The people who like to party it up don’t seem to be complaining.

Schrizto, what are you thoughts on the freshman dorms? Do you know anyone who’s living in one of the less common dorms such as Bruce Hall or Lothrop? It seems like Sutherland and the Towers are the most sought after, but the singles in Lothrop seem pretty nice too.

I live in Towers, but haven’t seen much of the other dorms so I can’t say much about them.

Oh ok… are you in a single or a double? I’m thinking about requesting a single… but I’m worried about the social aspect of it.

here we go…

sutherland. nicest dorms (for freshmen), biggest rooms, possible suite with 3+ kids. literally right next to the on-campus fraternities. no noise, right by the peterson events center, and athletic facilities, nicest fitness center. however, smaller dining hall, far from classes, up a big hill(not that bad).

towers. pick B or A. small rooms, share a bathroom with 20 some kids, very small, most dining options, hub of campus (by all classes, closer to off campus fraternities). easy to meet people. everything goes on here.

holland. all girls dorms. located in the quad with the sophomore dorms and sororities. decent sized rooms. right next to towers, forbes, 5th, and all the dining. this might be your best option.

lothrop. i wouldn;t suggest lothrop. all singles, reasonably sized, no air conditioning, no dining hall, up a hill, a lot of noise.

party scene is good. easy to find parties. off campus parties are better than the on-campus fraternity parties.

i really would not recommend a single.

I have a single in Holland, and i LOVE it, except for mealtimes. At the beginning of the year, it’s easy to find someone to eat with, but without a roommate, I eat alone like once/day now. That being said, Holland is really close to everything, the layout and the people are very social, the rooms are quite large with high ceilings and big windows, and the bathrooms are cleaned every weekday! :)

i have also been looking at pitt, but to transfer. Do alot of upperclassmen still live on campus or do most move off after sophmore year or so

and going back to one of the original questions about diversity, do you get the vibe that everyone interacts with each other? i’m from a very liberal, diverse part of maryland and have friends of all races. do people at pitt tend to be kind of judgemental or do you get the openess vibe?

Well, D1 is rooming with an African American, an Asian, a Latina and an oriental if that means anything.

what or who is d1?

Daughter 1

I would say Pitt is pretty diverse - PA is a diverse state economically, politically, racially, urban vs. rural, etc. and all are pretty well represented at Pitt. You will definitely have no problem finding like-minded liberals. My daughter wanted a school that was diverse - feeling having balance at the college was important - she has met and become friendly with some very religious and very conservative people while she is a liberal agnostic.

She lived in a single in Holland (which was not her first choice for housing) but found the dorm VERY social. She made LOTS of friends with all sorts of people and never had any problems finding people to hang out with, eat with, exercise with, etc.
