Life at South Florida?

Hi, I am interested in going here in the Fall 2012 Term and had a couple of questions about life in Tampa. What do you guys do when you have time to kill? Is there generally a lot of stuff going on around campus? I know that football season will be fun. How are the dorms and just general things about your life at USF. Thanks!

I’m not going to sugar coat it like most people do.
Dorms: Unless you’re either really lucky or willing to pay $7000+ a year for housing, you’ll end up in the older, 50-year-old buildings in Andros.
Nightlife: There are plenty of clubs, bars, and hookah bars that most USF party students frequent. I personally don’t go to any of them, but the nightlife in Tampa in general is quite lively.
Non-alcoholic nightlife: This is the main thing that is lacking in this area. Unless you want to go out and get drunk at a club, there isn’t much to do out there. There are a few places here and there (Boba House, mall, etc…) where you can entertain yourself for an hour or so, but other than that, this is very much lacking in this area.
On-campus events: about one or two every month. Big events, that is. There is free food at almost every event, and they’re always on Friday nights. There is also movies on the lawn on Wednesday nights.
Football season: Can’t really speak for this one, I’ve never been to one.

Thanks for your honesty! I visit in April, so I’ll see how that goes!

I don’t think most USF students frequent bars; there are bars near and around town, but students aren’t in them 24/7. USF isn’t exactly a geriatric ward either; there are over 3 million people in Tampa Bay area and there is something to do for everyone. Just don’t sit in your dorm room looking at the walls, get out and about and you can find something to do both on and off campus. For example, the weather is nice now and I went to Busch Gardens down the street with friends last Sat.–there’s tons of stuff to do, in fact there might too many activities available that can interfere with your schoolwork if you’re not careful. USF’s new baseball and softball stadiums are opening this week–I might go over and watch a baseball game this weekend to relax and catch some rays.

Too, even the oldest dorms are ok in my book, all the dorm rooms are smallish around 12’ X 15’, they’re clean, safe, air conditioned, relatively quiet–what more do you need?

There’s plenty to do if you have a car and are willing to drive far. Most of the stuff around campus is either hookah or club-type bars.

I haven’t had a car the 2 1/2 years I’ve been at USF; I wish I did, but I don’t. If I need a car ride somewhere off campus, I’ve always been able to get a lift from someone who has a car. I’ve got a bike I use most days. I use the shuttle on campus regularily and as you know it goes over to University Mall and near the Wal-Mart too. You can make a connection with the city bus line to go anywhere in Tampa if you want, I’ve never done that yet. When I need to get across campus late at night I phone “Safe Team” and they give me a ride in a golf-cart to my apartment by 50th St. I know everyone has different interests and different things they like to do; all I know is I keep myself busy on campus with activities, I have a little campus job, have school work to keep me busy and in general I’m happy with what’s available to do on and around campus.

Thanks lizard!

Ybor is where the club partys at, plenty of people have house parties, the hooka lounges are dope, and if your an athlete like me, basketball is one of tampa’s biggest sports so theres always a pick up game going on everywhere. Brandon is a really nice mall to chill at

Thanks man. What sport do you play?

i play basketball man. starting shooting guard on my varsity team
