Hello,
Okay so I recently visited SBU and I actually really liked it. It's one of my top choice schools because a) I live instate and it would be close to home and cheap for me and b) I'm planning on majoring in something science-related (most likely engineering) and it's a great school for that. However, after researching it more I've found so many overwhelmingly negative reviews. It's kind of disheartening because there is a pretty big chance I'm going to go here and I don't want to go to a school where everyone is unhappy.
I know there are tons of threads on this subject already but they all seem to be from years ago and I'd like to hear from current students and/or recent graduates. How is life at stony brook? Is it still dead on the weekends? How are the professors? etc..
(Also as a side note, I've seen a lot of rants about the weather and the campus itself. I liked the campus when I visited and although the buildings weren't the prettiest I didn't mind them and i thought it was pretty. And I'm planning on attending a school somewhere in upstate NY or in New England either way so I'm prepared for sucky weather in the winters).
Thank you in advance!!!! :)

Many students who attend Stony Brook live on Long Island and go home for the weekends. So, a big drawback is that the dorms empty at the end of the day on Thursday and they don’t fill up again until Sunday night or Monday morning.

Hi Lyssa2799,

My name is Meg and I recently graduated with my bachelor’s from Stony Brook. To be honest, I loved my undergraduate experience so much that I decided to stay for graduate school!

SBU isn’t different from any other university in this regard: your college experience is what you make it. What separates Stony Brook from other universities, though, is the fact that there are so many resources available here to help you make your individual college experience as fun and rewarding as possible.

I found that the best way to have a great experience here was to get involved. There are over 375 registered clubs and organizations on campus (take a look here to see some of the clubs registered on SB Life: [SB Life - Home](<a href=“- SB Engaged”>http://stonybrook.collegiatelink.net/)) to get involved in, as well as many opportunities for internships and employment through assistance at the Career Center ([Home | Stony Brook University Career Center](<a href=“Career Center | Stony Brook University”>http://career.stonybrook.edu/)). The Weekend Life Council, with the help of professional staff members, creates a forum for helping highlight and create fun campus-wide events that take place over the weekend.

If you’re into sports, our Division I sports teams are a good reason to stay over the weekend. In fact, over 5,000 Stony Brook students decided to attend our homecoming football game last year (which had a maxed out crowd of over 11,000 fans!). I never appreciated (or even liked) sports before I came here, but the draw of free t-shirts and the crowd excitement made me a true Seawolves fan!

If you’re more about recreation and wellness, Stony Brook’s recreation center (<a href=“stony brook rec center[/url] - Google Search”>stony brook rec center - Google Search) opened last fall and has been a really popular spot for students. The center offers fitness classes as well as a variety of machines and free weights, and the best part about it is that it doesn’t require a paid membership; your Stony Brook ID gets you in.

As far as professors go, 98% instructional faculty hold doctoral degrees or highest degrees in their fields, so you know that you are getting a quality education from well-trained and well-versed faculty.

Hope this information helps a little bit!

Best of luck!
