Hey, I was just wondering about life in Binghamton, aside from the academics. I'm planning to apply in my Senior year (end of 2007) and it's one of my top choices right now. So how is life on campus, and outside of campus? Are there shopping malls nearby, movie theaters, and any other hang-out places for young adults/students? Is it quiet or exciting to be in? How are the people? How do you like it there?

It would be greatly appreciated if any insights can be given!

Heh...being a high school student in the Binghamton area...I must say that a lot of locals tend to compalin about how boring it is. But I'll answer your specific questions.

Shopping malls: We have one major one very close to campus called Oakdale Mall, and pretty much it's the only one. There are several mini-malls though, one very close to campus called Town Square.

Movie theaters, well there's one in that Town Square Mall I mentioned, a Lowe's, and there's also a Regal a few miles away. In the town of Endicott, there's also an old theatre that plays movies that have been awhile longer then the others, and it also does midnight showings of Rocky Horror Picture show once a month.

Uh...hang-out places...I think campus itself is your best bet...it has a lot more stuff generally then the city of Binghamton itself. We have a nice park (Recreation), we have a bunch of theatrical stuff, and we're well known for two things. Carosuels and marinated chicken. We have a festival for said chicken in August actually. Supposedly that's pretty fun.

Any other questions about the Binghamton area that I can answer?

Thank you so much for replying, ConfusedHSJunior! It was very helpful, so I have a clearer picture of the area now!

However I do have a few more questions: is the neighborhood considered really "quiet?" Since you've mentioned that people think that it's quite boring there. Do you also need to have a car to get to those places that you've listed? Is there convenient public transportation?

Thanks so much, once again, for informing me!

hi, im currently a freshmen in binghamton university, and just to answer a few of your questions... no u dont necessarily need a car. there are buses that run through campus and take you any where u need to go, except to the bus terminal i think. and the best thingof all is that its FREE. yes, its free, all u have to do is show the bus driver your school id and thats all you need to ride the bus. it takes u to the mall areas especially. theres lots to do around campus, and parties like everyday.

Yes...I forgot the Cyber Cafe...duh. That's a fun place. Trivia night, local bands, and even poetry readings once a month.

Also, if you're a sports fan, we have AA baseball and AHL hockey. Basketball, your best bet is probably at BU campus itself, or our local community college. And football fans, you're pretty much screwed, 'cause we have local high school football and on and off random football leagues, and that's about it.

well, bbyy since i dont know everyone on campus, its hard to say what they're like. but i must say that so far, the people ive met are very friendly, i was lucky enough to be friends with the people i met the first day. overall the people have been great.

Why does everyone say Binghamington is so boring or depressing? What could make it any worse than any other school? They all have the same stuff, dorms, few hang out spots here and there, malls, movies, whatever else. I don't see how it could really be that boring... considering as long as you find people and do something, you could have fun.

I dunno, just wanna get an idea of why people have a negative attitude towards Binghamton.

There's a mall, a wal-mart, all the usual retailers. There's movie theaters, late night activities, whatever. Half the schools ends up in downtown Binghamton on the weekends.

There's a block with seven bars on it, and there are just as many within walking distance of that area. This is where the majority of people (freshmen through seniors) end up going on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Main attractions include...

The Rat (grimy basement bar, cheapest drinks, hottest bartenders, best music, lets everyone in)
Sports Bar (slightly older, slightly more strict, large, one part bar, one part club)
Tony's (juniors and seniors, slightly more expensive)
Mad Moose (older, classier crowd, expensive drinks. newest place in town)

Other then that there's JTs, Boca Joe's/Flashbacks, Tom & Marty's, Dillinger's, Liquid, Club V, and a bunch of townie bars (The Belmar, Fitzies, On The Roxx, Scoreboard, Thirsty's). There's also The Ale House, near campus, but that's not a place to go if you're a freshman.

Loved Bing as an undergrad. Really low cost so you can do a lot more on a student budget (unlike NYC, Boston, DC, etc.) Sports teams are fun as are good theater and professional Opera company. Lots of great, affordable restaurants. Magic City Music Hall also has a lot of good concerts.
