Hi my son is down to considering New Paltz or Oswego. I know that Paltz has a better rep. but I really liked Oswego. A couple of questions about New Paltz. Drugs? Heard lots at New Paltz, any truth? overblown? My son is just a regular kid, likes sports, not an "artsy" " hippie" kind of kid. I hope I am not insulting anyone I don't know the terms to use anymore. I am just wondering if he would not fit in or is the campus diverse. Again, just going by what I hear, we visited and found the school very nice and it does have a great reputation. He is from Long Island and will major in Marketing/Business. Just looking to hear from kids/parents that are like him, not a jock, not a hippie, middle of the road, it's crunch time now trying to get as much info as we can. Thanks

I doubt NP is more drugged than any other college, though it did have that rep back when I was college age back in the 70’s. My daughter is a happy sophomore there and she’s extremely substance-free (more so than I was, and I was hardly a wild girl). She had one binge-drinking roommate last year but that could happen anywhere.

Anyone can fit in at SUNY New Paltz. It’s a very diverse campus. My son is a student there and also a middle of the road type. He has met all types - those that are into drugs and those that are not. None of his housemates are into drugs. It’s a really nice school in a great location with a fun college town. I’m happy to answer any other questions you might have.
