<p>I think it's dependent on how dependent you are on your parents. If they're paying for your college, you really aren't a resident of the state, only a paid visitor. If you're living, working, and going to school there on your own, you might have a better shot.</p>

<p>I think for out-of-state students, you can establish residency in one of two ways. </p>

<p>If you are financially independent (ie: you make enough to support yourself/ your parents didn't put you on their tax return form for the past 2 years) and have lived/worked in cali for over 1 year, you can establish residency.</p>

<p>Or</p>

<p>If you are financially dependent, your parents must move with you to california. If they work/live in cali. for over 1 year, and you are in cali as well, then you become a cali resident because your parents are considered cali resident. </p>

<p>I think that's how it works...right?</p>
