Life at UIUC

Hey,

I've been accepted to the Dept. Of Computer Science (Engineering).
I wanted to know about the life at UIUC, specially for Engineers.

Is it all work and no play?
I've heard that there isn't much to do in Urbana Champaign, so everything there is, is only on the campus. UC isn't much fun then ?

THe only thing that'sstopping me from going to UIUC is the environment and lifestyle there.

Thanks :D

As a UIUC alum I will admit that Champaign Urbana is not an exciting town, but the campus is a lot of fun, and I never had to go off campus to have fun. You will be in a great academic program, and I’m sure you will do well. Good luck on your journey.

One of my friends that goes here joined a frat and has told me some insane stories. I don’t know about life outside of frats, but from what he says you can have a ton of fun there.

Social life is amazing here, if you’re into drinking. Only gotta be 19 to get into the bars

No matter which college you choose, it’s what you make of it. If you put in the effort to have some fun, you’re going to have fun. But if you go to school thinking that the school is boring and it’s going to suck, well you’re going to have an interesting 4 years.

Well, I am not much into drinking at all :P

So, No Drinking = No fun ?
I mean if there is nothing to do out of campus…

What sort of things are you looking for, or what would you consider fun?

No drinking definitely doesnt equal no fun… There’s things to do for nondrinkers on campus. All I’m saying is that it’s easier to find things to do socially if drinking is an option.

Okay, so to be honest, I am from a big metropolitan city and love that life. Right now I’m considering between UBC in Vancouver and UIUC. So i’m guessing life in Vancouver might be my definition of fun. Things like Going for the occasional dinner, roaming about in malls, etc etc. But not limited to it. I hope you get the picture.

So, in both places i am going to do Computer engineering. UIUC is one of the best while UBC might be a notch lower. In your opinion, is it okay to go to a life that i like with a very good education or a life that i think i wont like with great education ?

Maybe this is a good place to ask this.

I’m hoping to transfer to UIUC too, and I’ve been wondering about the lifestyle around there.

Is there much to do outside of the city? I’m really into the outdoors…hiking, camping, mountain biking. Are there a lot of parks around to do things like this in?

What about live music? Not necessarily big name brand acts…even smaller local music scenes. Is there much in the way of that around?
